Dunedin Supporting your carer
Caring for someone can be stressful: your carer will need regular breaks to recharge their physical and mental batteries.
Day programmes are a great opportunity for carers to rest, while offering you a chance to socialise with like-minded people. There are a range of programmes (some subsidised by Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora) available that cater to specific needs, such as dementia support and kaumātua services.
Respite care is another option, providing temporary care in a rest home or residential facility. Access to respite care is typically through an assessment by your NASC or older person's service. High demand for respite care in some regions means it’s helpful to research available care homes in advance.
