BRIAN WELLS LODGE is a 16-bed secure unit within the Selwyn Village Complex at Point Chevalier, Auckland. Some rooms overlook the Waitakere Ranges and upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour, while others look out on to a tranquil and beautiful garden. All our residents have their own, single rooms.
LAVENDER COTTAGE is a secure Day Care Centre, one which is within the familiar setting of a suburban home, typical of its neighbours in Point Chevalier. The grounds, garden and the cottage itself are purposely kept this way so that people feel genuinely at home. Intimate care is offered for a maximum of 16 people on any one day. Lavender Cottage is at 23 Wainoni Street, Point Chevalier but access is from within the grounds of Selwyn Village.
We want all our residents and day care people to have an enjoyable time here, with as fulfilling a life as is possible for them. We encourage residents and their family members to talk over any concerns with our managers.
MAKING YOU AT HOME
Although both are secure units to ensure the safety of residents or day care people, everything possible is done to make people feel at home.
Visitors are welcome at any time, and family or friends are able to take their loved ones for an
outing or a walk around Selwyn Village. Our people enjoy seeing babies, young children and pet animals - please feel free to bring them when visiting. Visitors bringing their musical skills are welcome - their contribution is especially helpful and is appreciated.
We encourage residents to bring such things as pictures, personal items, TV and radios so as to make their rooms familiar.
A very special place within the grounds of Brian Wells Lodge is the gazebo where residents may sit and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of our garden. There are comfortable lounges where people relax and mix with others. And we mustn’t forget that real Brian Wells character - our cat with the ingenious name of ‘Puss’.
Although designed to be very safe and secure, people entering into day care can enjoy Lavender Cottage’s lovely grounds too. Some of our people choose to be outdoors in fine weather, taking part in the familiar every-day chores of earlier living - such as working in the vegetable patch or flower garden. With staff members or their families, our people are able to use the extensive facilities of Selwyn Village. These include the Mini Market and Post Shop, the ASB Bank, Craft Shop, Bric-a-brac shop, Second Hand Bookshop with cassettes and records - and a Used Clothes Shop.

Numerous activities are provided for enjoyment and we also provide activities designed to help people suffering from dementia to retain as much as possible of the routine of daily living – or even to gain new skills.

Located at 43 Target Street, Pt Chevalier, Selwyn Village is set in 26 acres of park-like grounds on the water’s edge of the Pt Chevalier Peninsula. These facilities are situated on the ground floor of Lichfield Towers and are available for the sole use and enjoyment of residents from the entire village. There are coffee and tea making facilities in the TV room kitchen. If you wish to access these facilities before 8.00 am and after 5.00 pm you may obtain a key from Administration for a deposit of $35.00 which is refundable on return.
The village Administration Block is located opposite the Chapel. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30 am - 4.30 pm. Saturday & Sunday, 10.00 am - 3.30 pm.
A branch of the Auckland Savings Bank is situated between the administration office and the Community Centre. It offers a full range of banking services.
Hours: Monday to Friday 9.30 am - 12.00 noon and 12.45 pm - 3.00 pm
BOOKS AND LIBRARY SERVICE
Each house has a library where residents may read or borrow books. Collectively, the libraries have a stock of over 2000 books. Large print books which have been withdrawn from public libraries are given to the village and may be borrowed free of charge.
An Auckland City Mobile Library Bus visits Selwyn Village every Thursday between 9.15 am and 10.30 am and stops outside the main doors of Kerridge. It will not visit on Public Holidays or between the Christmas and New Year period.
CHAPEL OF CHRIST THE KING
The chapel is the focal point of Selwyn Village. Regular services of worship are held in the chapel and broadcast into the rest homes. Services of worship are also held in Brian Wells Lodge and Christ’s Hospital. A brochure is available detailing the chaplaincy service in Selwyn Village. Information on Chapel Services is available in the weekly newsletter.
Situated in the Community Centre, the Coffee Inn is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm daily.
The Community Centre is located beside the ASB Bank and the Mini-Market and is available to all village residents who may wish to utilize it.
The Craft Centre is located in the Community Centre and is a place where you can continue with your creative and artistic pursuits.
Registered medical practitioners are on duty or on call at all times.
Guest accommodation for family and friends is available for rent. Please enquire about prices and make reservations through the receptionist at Administration.
The village hairdressing salon is located in the Community Centre. It is open Monday to Saturday: please telephone or call in to make an appointment. In addition, hairdressers visit each rest home and the hospital at least once a week.
HEARING AND HEARING AIDS
A volunteer provides a highly efficient service for anyone who has a hearing aid and who needs supplies such as batteries. A Hearing Association member visits the village. Appointments may be made through the Medical Centre.
For rest home residents mail is normally delivered to each ‘house’ by 11.00 am Monday to Friday.

Each ‘house’ has a box for outgoing mail which is cleared at 1.00 pm on weekdays and 4.30 pm on Saturdays. Mail to all independent living areas will be delivered by NZ Post directly to their own mail box. Please ensure your Selwyn Village address is given to NZ Post. If you are unsure of what your address is please check at administration first.
MAINTENANCE - (All Property Related Matters / Appliance Faults)
Independent residents please note that in order to provide an effective and efficient service the Village has preferred contractors that are on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. These contractors are familiar with the site, the overall infrastructure of the Village and our Health and Safety procedures etc. The procedure to access one of the above services is as follows:

All meals are prepared and cooked on site. A qualified dietician oversees the menu. The main mid-day meal is served in the dining room of Lichfield Towers. There are two sittings:
11.30 am Cottage Residents 12.00 noon Villa and Apartment Residents
The mid-day meal can be ordered by Independent Residents if they wish and/or for guests by signing the reservation book in the dining room by 3.00 pm the day before. You must then purchase a meal ticket from reception in the Administration Office. Meal tickets will be collected by a staff member attending to your table.
Medical Centre hours are Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm.
MINI MARKET - POST SHOP
This is located in the Administration Block and sells a range of essential items for your convenience.
The Selwyn News is the village newsletter, published weekly on Wednesdays. It gives village news and information about activities, entertainment, church service times and other events. It is distributed throughout the village free of charge.
Please arrange your own ‘Herald’ delivery by phoning the Circulation Department on ph 373 6000.
Our physiotherapists provide a service to all residents in care.
RESIDENTS COMMITTEES and the INDEPENDENT RESIDENTS COUNCIL
These have been formed by the residents to liaise with the Selwyn Foundation administration. Each house or area of the village has a resident’s committee, with meetings open to all residents of the area concerned.
Our security guard patrols the village all night from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am.
On the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month: This leaves for Lynmall from outside Lichfield Towers at 11.45 am and leaves Lynmall at 2.00 pm. The transport cost is $3.00 per person.
On the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month there is a trip to Pt Chevalier shops. The Bus leaves outside Lichfield at 10.30 am, returning at 11.30 am. The Transport cost is $1.00 per person. This service is for Independent Residents only and reservations are made through the receptionist in Administration.
A no-smoking policy within our buildings applies to all residents, visitors and staff. Those who smoke need to go outside to one of the properly designated smoking areas, all of which are located more than 2 metres away from any window or door opening. Residents of rental and ‘Occupation Right Agreement’ areas are permitted to smoke within their own private living accommodation but not in any area of communal activity.
These are available at a reduced cost for attending Hospital Appointments only. Please see the receptionist at Administration.
Within the village, transport is provided by buggies driven by our volunteers. They operate from the Community Centre 9.00 am to 12.00 noon and 1.00 pm to 2.30 pm each week day. To request a buggy please phone 846 0119 ext 756. On weekends, please phone 846 0119 ext 819.
VILLAGE FACILITIES - available for hire by our residents
The Community Centre, Theatre and ground floor Lichfield Towers (either the Lounge or TV Room) are available for private functions and bookings should be made through the Activities Co-ordinator.
We charge a $30.00 deposit plus $3.00 per person to hire each area and these charges help to defray the costs in maintaining the standard of these facilities. Hireage includes use of the kitchen facilities, crockery and cutlery. If staff are required to clean up, serve or be in attendance, such costs will be additional. Please consult with the Independent Services Manager for details.
These are people who give their time and support to the life of the village. Most volunteers come from the community, others are themselves village residents.
THE SELWYN FOUNDATION GROUP
- The Selwyn Foundation has been around for a very long time.
Selwyn’s residents mirror New Zealand society as a whole, having people from all kinds of backgrounds, life experiences and interests. These days, people entering our retirement villages are older - now that people are living and remaining active for much longer.
Nevertheless, people residing in Rest Homes as well as those living independently, are encouraged to live as full a life as is humanly possible through maintaining existing links with community activities such as the RSA Club, local churches, Probus, U3A and sports clubs. Organised activities are on offer too – and managers are always interested in hearing of new ideas for activities, outings and social gatherings.
Today’s retirement villages are the culmination of over 50 years of progress. It was towards the late 1940s that the Anglican Church’s Auckland City Mission became very concerned about the plight of elderly people to cope in sometimes dilapidated houses, often too large for them once children had grown up and moved away.
The Mission had already done considerable work with older people by 1954 when the first 20 retired people became residents at Selwyn Village in Point Chevalier. This was the first rest home and retirement complex of its kind built in New Zealand. It still exists, although almost grown beyond recognition.
In 1967, the Mission arranged for the creation of The Selwyn Foundation as a separate charitable trust, specifically set up to look after this special concern for the needs of older people in our society.
Named after George Augustus Selwyn, first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, the Foundation is an independent perpetual trust and not-for-profit organisation. Selwyn owns or manages retirement facilities in Northland, throughout greater Auckland and in the Waikato. It continues to grow and flourish - it is here to stay!
