LAVENDER COTTAGE DEMENTIA DAY CENTRE AT SELWYN VILLAGE

Lavender Cottage is a secure day centre for people with mild to moderate dementia and provides quality care for up to 16 clients a day. Situated within the grounds of Selwyn Village in Point Chevalier, the warm and welcoming cottage environment provides a safe, comfortable setting for client activities, with an enclosed garden and outdoor seating also available for clients to enjoy.

Clients’ participation and engagement in life are promoted through an array of meaningful social, cognitive and physical activities tailored for older adults living with dementia. These include reminiscing sessions, music and art therapy, gentle exercise, minibus outings and gardening. Clients are also involved in daily living skills and familiar tasks associated with the running of the cottage, such as food preparation, washing dishes and general household chores, making it a ‘home from home’ for those who attend. Meals include morning and afternoon tea and a cooked lunch. The programme is flexible and takes clients’ abilities into consideration, as well as their preferred level of participation, adapting to reflect the individual needs of those attending on that particular day.

Lavender Cottage is a multicultural day centre and clients are of various ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.

Located at 23 Wainoni Street, Point Chevalier, access is from within the grounds of Selwyn Village. A minibus pick-up service is available by arrangement. The centre operates Monday – Friday, 9.00am – 3.00pm. It is closed on public holidays.

ACCESSING THE SERVICE

The day programme service is available to older people diagnosed with dementia living in the community and who are referred by the Ministry of Health’s Needs Assessment and Service Coordination service (NASC). The information gathered during the NASC assessment is used in conjunction with input from the person’s family or whānau to develop an individual care plan. If the service is full, people can go on a waiting list until a suitable place becomes available.

REFERRALS

Clients can be referred by:

• the Needs Assessment and Service Coordination service (NASC) for Auckland
• Dementia Auckland
• Te Whatu Ora Community Mental Health Services
• Disability Resource Team (DRT) or Disability Support Link (DSL)

Located in Point Chevalier, the village provides rest home, age-related hospital-level and rest home-level dementia care across three care homes as well as a wide range of stylish independent retirement living options within an attractive and peaceful setting. A palm-lined avenue, park-like grounds and well-tended flowerbeds complement the garden environment, and coastal walks lead to a sheltered swimming beach. THE SELWYN FOUNDATION

Lavender Cottage is operated by The Selwyn Foundation, an independent, faith-based New Zealand registered charity providing services to older people and their families. The Foundation has been leading the way in improving the quality of life of seniors since 1954. As pioneers of the retirement village model and of residential aged care in this country, we are uniquely experienced in providing care, independent retirement living and community outreach services for older adults.

Our Mission is: To deliver quality services that are responsive to the ageing person and their family, ensuring that our charitable outreach supports those who are vulnerable or in need. As a result of the ageing of New Zealand's population and the growing numbers of seniors who are vulnerable or in need, our work is more important than ever. With our charitable Mission as our foremost strategic objective, the Foundation is focused on providing charitable support and outreach where there is hardship amongst seniors who live in the wider community – whether that be loneliness and social isolation, material/financial/emotional- or housing-related.
