What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness that involves being fully present and engaged in the present moment, without judgement or distraction. It involves paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, and cultivating a sense of calm and focus.

For older New Zealanders, mindfulness can be an effective way to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and improve overall well-being. Here are some examples of mindfulness practices that older adults can incorporate into their daily lives:

Mindful breathing: Focus on your breath, taking slow, deep breaths in and out. As you breathe, try to clear your mind of distracting thoughts and simply focus on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of your body.

Mindful walking: Go for a walk in a quiet, peaceful place, and focus on the physical sensations of walking. Notice the feeling of your feet on the ground, the movement of your body, and the sounds and sights around you.

Body scan: Lie down or sit comfortably, and focus on each part of your body, starting with your toes and moving up to your head. Pay attention to any sensations or feelings you notice, without judging or analysing them.

Mindful eating: Take the time to really savour and enjoy your food, focusing on the taste, texture, and smell of each bite. Avoid distractions such as watching TV or checking your phone while you eat.

Mindful listening: Pay close attention to the sounds around you, without judging or analysing them. Try to simply be present and aware of the sounds, whether it’s the birds singing outside or the hum of traffic in the distance.

Mindfulness can also be incorporated into daily activities such as gardening, cooking, or spending time with loved ones. The key is to focus on the present moment and cultivate a sense of awareness and calm.

Mindfulness is a simple but powerful practice that can benefit older people by reducing stress, improving cognitive function, and promoting overall well-being. Incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine – even in small ways – can have a positive impact on your overall wellbeing and quality of life.
