Residents Say It Best
”Better accessibility is what drew a Masterton couple from their home of 53- years to Enliven’s Kandahar Village, located in Lansdowne, Masterton. Before moving to Kandahar Village Graham and Lin Workman had a big two-storey house that was becoming hard for them to manage.
Lin has multiple sclerosis and was getting to the stage where she needed a wheelchair to move around the house. This meant finding a house with good accessibility was important.
In addition to a more accessible home, Lin says they also wanted a drive-in garage, a decent sized bathroom with a wet-floor shower, and double glazing. “Kandahar Village ticked all those boxes.” All villas at Kandahar Village are designed with Lifemark 4 accessibility features and have been built with consideration for the ageing process.
Lin says they have also enjoyed the sense of community at Kandahar Village.”
Finding Freedom Through Accessibility
”After her husband passed away, Pam Palmer's large house in Tinui became too much to manage. Moving to Enliven's Kandahar Village in Masterton meant downsizing, with many items going to charity shops. "I was sorry in one way, but I've got my precious things of my fathers and my mothers, and things my husband was given," she says, highlighting how downsizing preserves what truly matters.
Two years on, Pam loves her villa. With a smaller home and Enliven handling maintenance, she's found unexpected freedom. "It is so easy to manage. It leaves you free to do other things."
She says she is not one to make friends easily but has enjoyed the social nature of the village. Pam helps organise charity collections and social events like fish and chip rugby nights. Pam's experience proves that downsizing's rewards – simplified living and enriched social opportunities – can outweigh the challenges.”

Mythbusting - Retirement Villages are a rip-off
Why it’s considered a worthwhile investment.
NOTE: The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (The Act) is designed to provide improved protection for people who 'buy' into a retirement village. If you intend to 'purchase' you must get independent legal advice before signing your occupation right agreement as required under The Act. Some Retirement Village type facilities are not required to register under The Act so different legal requirements apply. Please make sure you investigate fully.
In some villages there may be some Retirement Village units that have multiple uses e.g. a Serviced Apartment may also be used as a Residential Care Suite. The same unit may therefore show in several places on Eldernet.
