About Hawthorndale Care Village
A New Era of Senior Living
Inspired by the world-renowned De Hogeweyk dementia village in the Netherlands, Hawthorndale Care Village offers a secure, familiar environment where Residents live with independence, dignity, and joy — supported by a dedicated, caring team.
Set among beautifully landscaped grounds, the Village encourages connection and activity with garden paths, seating areas, a playground for visiting tamariki, a hāngī pit for community gatherings, and a Men’s Shed for building and storytelling.
At the heart of the Village is our vibrant Care Centre, featuring:
• Café
• Corner Shop
• Library
• Physio Gym
• Activities Centre
• Hairdresser
• Hugo Theatre
• Calvary Chapel
Life here is all about enjoying each day — your way — with the care and companionship you need.
Our Village includes 13 Care Houses, each home to 6–7 Residents. Every house feels like home, complete with a kitchen, lounge, and outdoor spaces for relaxation and connection.
Care House Highlights
• Colour-coded exteriors and letterboxes for easy recognition
• Home-cooked meals prepared in-house to Residents’ tastes
• Every bedroom includes a private toilet and basin, plus an individual heat pump for year-round comfort
• Each house has it’s own laundry facilities for personal clothing, helping maintain a sense of routine and familiarity.
• Open-plan communal areas for shared living and meaningful connection
Our Standard Care Houses feature a shared main bathroom equipped with a toilet, basin, shower, and ceiling hoist — ideal for Residents who prefer a more communal setting and additional support when needed.
Our Premium Care Houses offer an added level of comfort, with each bedroom featuring ceiling to floor windows and its own private ensuite providing greater privacy and convenience while still enjoying the warmth and companionship of shared living spaces.
No matter the level of care — residential, hospital, dementia, palliative, or respite — our approach ensures every Resident lives well, every day.

Special features
The Hawthorndale is due to open on 5th May and we are soooo excited! This is a new model of care allowing residents to live in houses of 6-7 people, living an 'as usual' lifestyle. They will be able to be part of the daily household activities and join in if they can, or sit back and watch the meal prep or smell those aromas of food cooking, all the while stirring up those memories of the past.
The Care Village is fully geo- fenced and secure. There are cameras all around the grounds of the Village but not in the houses. The Residents assessed as having dementia will wear a bracelet which will alert to the Nurses phone in certain points, such as hallways and exit doors (once houses are locked at night), and also to exit doors from the Care Centre.
During the day they will be free to walk around the Village and the Care Centre without being able to leave the building. Those not assessed as having dementia are free to leave as desired
