To enrich each person, the community and the world

OUR VALUES – NGĀ UARA
We strive to achieve this vision by working with openness, honesty, integrity and passion

THE WORK WE DO – NGĀ MAHINGA
We establish trusting relationships based on respect and acceptance.
We encourage people’s participation in companionship-based care in their small homes.
We are privileged to accompany people as they journey towards the end of their life.
We welcome family/whānau and the wider community as integral to people’s lives.
We promote inclusion and the rights and values of each person.
We celebrate unity in diversity.

We specialise in person-centred care for people who live with dementia. This is the work we have passionately chosen to do. We care for people in small, cosy homes with a loving, warm and homely atmosphere where each person is supported to experience each moment richly. Our small homes concept means that people with dementia experience life in a less clinical and more normalised, familiar way. Small homes that inter-connect, also bring a sense of community for a person with dementia.

Special features

SMALL HOMES
Small homes mean that the environment is very homely, and residents orientate to their environment more easily. There is a family feel. We get to know our residents very well.

BEST FRIENDS APPROACH TO CARE
All our staff attend this training as a part of their comprehensive orientation. The main focus is on developing empathy, communication and an understanding of our residents’ needs. Our team members treat each resident like a very best friend. They will sit and chat with your loved one. They will laugh together, sit on the sofa and tell stories and really love being in each other’s company.

Interests & activities

Over time, we learn what really works for each person. We discover what they like to do most, their most active times and the times when they like to rest. We explore, discover, and initiate what works best for each individual. This will often reflect past activity patterns and interests.

Here we create an environment that closely mirrors a household living experience, with access to familiar homely pursuits such as setting the table, folding linen, peeling vegetables, flower arranging, gardening, preparing and eating a meal, washing the dishes, or reading a magazine. In our small homes these interactions occur spontaneously with all staff many times within a day.

Activities are organised by our Diversional Therapists to cater for the needs and interests of the residents. We go out regularly. Van outings to North Canterbury beaches for an icecream or trips to Sumner to watch the windsurfers are two examples. Group activities include indoor bowls, movement with music, painting and art, cooking, word games, quizzes and housie, to name but a few. Sing-alongs are enjoyed by many.
