Do all retirement villages have care on site?

Not every retirement village in Aotearoa New Zealand offers aged care on site, so it's important to understand exactly what support is available before you make a move. The questions below can help you compare villages and get a feel for the level of care you can expect.

  1. What services are available onsite? For example, podiatry, massage, physiotherapy, or other wellbeing supports.
  2. Is a nurse available 24/7? This can be crucial in the event of a medical emergency.
  3. How are care needs assessed? Who decides if you need a higher level of care? How is this decision made?
  4. Can you receive publicly funded home support? Some villages don't allow this, so make sure you check your contract.
  5. Could you receive high-level care in your home? If not, what alternative options would be available to you?
  6. Is there a care home onsite? If one is planned, ask when it's expected to be completed. As a village resident, would you have priority entry? What happens if there are no vacancies at the time you need care?
