Not every retirement village in Aotearoa New Zealand offers aged care on site, so it's important to understand exactly what support is available before you make a move. The questions below can help you compare villages and get a feel for the level of care you can expect.
- What services are available onsite? For example, podiatry, massage, physiotherapy, or other wellbeing supports.
- Is a nurse available 24/7? This can be crucial in the event of a medical emergency.
- How are care needs assessed? Who decides if you need a higher level of care? How is this decision made?
- Can you receive publicly funded home support? Some villages don't allow this, so make sure you check your contract.
- Could you receive high-level care in your home? If not, what alternative options would be available to you?
- Is there a care home onsite? If one is planned, ask when it's expected to be completed. As a village resident, would you have priority entry? What happens if there are no vacancies at the time you need care?
