Am I paying too much for power?

A free online tool called ‘Powerswitch’ (provided by ConsumerNZ) allows people to compare electricity and gas prices offered by providers throughout New Zealand. This service was previously known as ‘What’s My Number.’

Finding out how much you can save takes less than two minutes and involves answering some simple questions: the more questions you answer, the better your estimate will be.

  • What is your address? Once you have selected your address, you will be shown the energy provider you are currently with. If you have a power bill handy, you can use this to get savings estimates; otherwise, you can select ‘I don’t have a bill’ to see the providers current offers.
  • You will then be asked how many people live in your home, and whether there is someone home during the day.
  • Next, it will ask you to select the source of heating you have. If you choose heat pump, it will also ask if you if this is used as an air conditioner.
  • The last two questions ask how your hot water is heated, and what insulation you have.

Once you click ‘Finish’ you will be shown all the power options that are available to you. If you find a cheaper option, you can even start the process of switching from your current provider.

Shopping around for the best deal not only benefits you but helps all consumers, as it pushes energy providers to make their prices more competitive.

If you’re not an internet user, perhaps ask someone who is to do a comparison for you. Otherwise, you can call ConsumerNZ freephone 0800 266 786 who may be able to provide assistance.
