Description
Atawhai has 36 beds at rest home level and also offers hospital home and retirement village (independent living) options.

There is Registered Nurse coverage 24 hours per day.

The rest home and hospital is a senior care facility which has particularly strong connections to the local community and a wonderful group of volunteers.

We run an award winning activities programme designed to meet the needs of all our residents. It includes a diverse range of daily group and one to one activities as well as regular events and entertainment.

Monthly themed lunches, A La Carte restaurant evenings and happy hours always prove popular with residents and their families alike.

Regular activities including cooking and exercise classes, arts and craft, Men’s club, housie, crosswords, knitting, gardening, games, quizzes, indoor bowls and church services. In addition, we have visits from local schools and kindi children, artists and other community groups as well as bi weekly entertainment by local singers and musicians.

For those who like to venture out, we offer something for everyone, including fishing trips, gallery visits, shopping, outings to parks, cafés and the RSA or simply seat back and enjoy one of our weekly sightseeing tours around the beautiful Hawkes Bay.

Because everyone loves a bit of friendly competition, we take on some of the other homes in the area in bowling matches, quizzes and our version of Commonwealth Games.

Of course, families are a special part of our residents life’s and are always welcome and encouraged to join in. Whether it’s one of our special BBQ lunch outings by the beach, an outing to events such as Horse of the Year or any one of our daily or weekly activities or events.

One on one walks, hand massage, pampering, reminiscing, talking books, music, chats, pet therapy are some of the one to one activities we also offer.

With the local village being only 3 blocks away; local amenities, the library, shops, banks and the post office are all close by.

Atawhai is part of the Oceania Group, a member of the New Zealand Aged Care Association. Atawhai has attained a four year certificate with the MOH through its delivery of excellence in care.

Testimonials
“I can’t speak highly enough of Atawhai, the excellent care brought me back to where I should have been health wise. There are plenty of activities to choose from, good meals and all staff are wonderful.”
Elva Burns, resident

“I think Atawhai is wonderful. We are very well looked after and if you ever need anything, all you have to do is ask. If I were anywhere else, I wouldn’t be able to do all the things I want to do.”
Merrie Leipst, resident

“Atawhai has a homely feel to it and staff really care for the residents. The activities team always encourages residents to go on outings and join in activities. I enjoy coming along to outings with my husband and helping out when I can.”
Dot McLeod, resident’s wife

“I would recommend Atawhai to anyone. My wife receives great care and the way staff talk to residents make them feel at home. The amount of activities that go on is good therapy as well.”
David Kellett, resident’s husband
