Wilson Carlile is a retirement village managed by the Selwyn Foundation Group - offering Hospital Care, Rest Home Accommodation, Respite and Day Care - all set in beautifully kept grounds at 562 Grey Street, Hamilton East.
We are on an attractive, level site not far from Memorial Park and the magnificent Waikato River.
Located within 1.5kms of Hamilton East Shopping, Medical Centre and Churches, there is also a pharmacy, café and convenience shopping within easy walking distance.
Our Hospital has 16 'premium' single bedrooms with ensuites, and 4 'standard' rooms.
Built on the same level as the main Rest Home, this means residents in the hospital have easy access to seating in the smaller alcoves off the corridors, as well as to the main lounge adjacent to the dining room.
Wilson Carlile Village also has a number of attractive brick Villas for independent living and its Rest Home has accomodation for 39 residents.
Our aim is to provide a warm and friendly environment. Caregivers and other staff are trained to meet the particular needs of those in their care. This includes a fully-trained Diversional Therapist. Wilson Carlile provides a varied activities programme - over-seen by a contracted Occupational Therapist.
(Diversional Therapy involves designing programmes to meet the needs of the people. The aim is to reassure or stimulate our residents and day care people, while at the same time enabling them to maintain as much independence, dignity and self-esteem as possible.)
Although our doctor visits regularly, some residents may prefer to have their own GP call on them as required.
We want all our people to have an enjoyable time. Our manager is happy to meet with you, and to talk over any concerns you may have. It is appreciated if you take the time to make an appointment - telephone 07 838 1562.
For RESIDENTS - MAKING YOU AT HOME
This is your home and you are free to come and go as you please. However we do ask that you inform staff of your whereabouts when leaving the Village. There is open visiting at Wilson Carlile - your family and friends are always made very welcome.
Please feel encouraged to bring such personal things as some of your furniture, pictures, photographs, treasured mementos and your own television set.
For DAY CARE PEOPLE
Day Care programmes take place in our spacious, well-equipped recreation room from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm, Monday to Friday. The Activities Programme is planned three months in advance, the weekly programme being displayed on notice boards for all participants and family to see.
Morning and afternoon tea as well as a light luncheon are provided. Most people coming for our Day Care programme are brought by family members. Some participants are driven home by staff members afterwards. For people coming from some residential areas, we may be able to provide transport to and from the Village - please enquire. There is a nominal charge for Day Care - to enquire please telephone (07) 838 1562.
Our convenience store opens weekly to cater for your basic shopping needs. (Staff will buy in special items at your request.) Wilson Carlile has its own library and chapel on site.
HERE FOR YOU
Our friendly receptionist is able to help residents in many ways, including . . .
- Arranging to have your newspaper delivered to your room.
- Help to manage your money, through operating a personal petty cash account and paying any bills you may incur.
- Supplying stamps, basic stationery items and helping with overseas mailing, toll calls or in assisting you to arrange for a private telephone to be installed in your room.
- Seeing to your transport needs.
- Arranging appointments with our hairdressers, the podiatrist, physiotherapist and hearing aid specialist.
All diets and appetites are catered for - you may prefer a salad to hot vegetables for example. You are also welcome to have family or a guest for lunch at a small charge payable to reception.
Church services are open to residents, friends and family of all denominations. Our chaplain is available for your spiritual needs.
ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
People participating in the Day Care programme have the opportunity to make new friendships as they join with our Residents in the numerous activities which are provided for the enjoyment and well-being of our people. These may include . . .

- Quizzes and intellectual afternoons.
- Housie, cards and board games.
- Long bowls and pool tables
- Music, choir and sing-a-long sessions
- Arts and crafts,
- Regular mini-bus trips and outings – as seats are available.
- Spiritual Services in our Chapel
- Frequent visits from entertainers and concert parties.
- Interaction with other Rest Homes
- Television and videos.
- ‘Happy Hours’, Birthday and other Celebrations.
- Valuables: Although Wilson Carlile does not accept responsibility for valuables such as jewellery and money, nevertheless items may be formally handed in to the office for safekeeping.
- Fire: Wilson Carlile has smoke detectors and sprinklers. Should you hear an alarm, please stay where you are. Our staff have fire evacuation procedures in place and you can feel safe in their hands.
- Visitors Book: We have a visitor and residents signing in/out book which is monitored. This helps to ensure the safety of all our people.
BEING GOOD NEIGHBOURS
Please do not smoke within our Rest Home - we do have designated areas for smokers. We ask that you respect your neighbours by not having your TV or radio on too loudly.
THE SELWYN FOUNDATION GROUP – AN OVERVIEW and VISION STATEMENT
- The Selwyn Foundation has been around for a very long time.
Selwyn’s residents mirror New Zealand society as a whole, having people from all kinds of backgrounds, life experiences and interests. These days, people entering our retirement villages are older - now that people are living and remaining active for much longer.
Nevertheless, people residing in Rest Homes as well as those living independently, are encouraged to live as full a life as is humanly possible through maintaining existing links with community activities such as the RSA Club, local churches, Probus, U3A and sports clubs. Organised activities are on offer too – and managers are always interested in hearing of new ideas for activities, outings and social gatherings.
Today’s retirement villages are the culmination of over 50 years of progress. It was towards the late 1940s that the Anglican Church’s Auckland City Mission became very concerned about the plight of elderly people to cope in sometimes dilapidated houses, often too large for them once children had grown up and moved away.
The Mission had already done considerable work with older people by 1954 when the first 20 retired people became residents at Selwyn Village in Point Chevalier. This was the first rest home and retirement complex of its kind built in New Zealand. It still exists, although almost grown beyond recognition.
In 1967, the Mission arranged for the creation of The Selwyn Foundation as a separate charitable trust, specifically set up to look after this special concern for the needs of older people in our society.
Named after George Augustus Selwyn, first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, the Foundation is an independent perpetual trust and not-for-profit organisation. Selwyn owns or manages retirement facilities in Northland, throughout greater Auckland and in the Waikato. It continues to grow and flourish - it is here to stay!
