We are a modern, purpose-built 29 and 6 flexi bedroom options, these are either Rest Home or Hospital level standard rooms depending on the level of care required by the individual, within Whangarei’s Selwyn Park retirement village, at 15 Puriri Park Road, Maunu.
Our 25 premium rooms have an ensuite with a shower and toilet - and we also have 10 ‘standard’ rooms with shared toilet facilities.
Bishop Buckle Hospital has several cosy areas which overlook the grounds or the Maunu Reserve which is rich in native bird life. Built up gardens provide opportunity for gardening and a shared courtyard provides a safe haven for our pets and for families to enjoy outdoor living with their elders in our little "garden of eden"
Selwyn Park village also provides Rest Home Care, a purpose designed Dementia Care Residential Unit and attractive ‘Villas’ for independent living.
We want you to have an enjoyable time here, and encourage you to talk over any ideas or concerns with our manager. It is a good idea to arrange a time to meet.
Our aim is to provide a warm and friendly environment within which full nursing care is provided. The hospital is staffed with Registered Nurses 24 hours each day. They are assisted by caregivers, trainee diversional therapist and other allied health professional staff as appropriate.
All staff have on-going training as to the particular needs of elders in their care, and safety issues are a priority. Doctors routinely visit the hospital and there is medical coverage over 24 hours seven days a week.
MAKING YOU AT HOME
We welcome visitors and encourage them to take you for regular outings. We can lend you a wheel chair if necessary.
Do bring your photographs,favourite pictures and ornaments. However, we do limit the amount of furniture in Hospital areas to allow our staff the space to use equipment such as shower chairs or hoists. Please ask us before you bring in extra furniture.
We have several sheltered areas where you may sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. There are Tea and coffee making facilities available around the hospital and a BBQ area in the courtyard for you and your family to have a BBQ. All you need to bring is the food and we will provide the extras.
HERE FOR YOU
Our friendly receptionist Hayley is able to help you in many ways. These include . . .
- Ordering a newspaper for you and arrange for payment.
- Make appointments with our visiting hairdresser and podiatrist.
- If you wish, our receptionist will help to manage your money, through operating a personal petty cash account and paying any incidental bills you may incur.
A private telephone may be installed in your room at rental charge through Telecom, although a telephone is also available for you to use in our reception area.
All laundry is done on the premises but we ask that woollens and delicate items be taken home by family whenever possible. All items need to be named. It is a good idea to bring in a small laundry hamper for dirty clothing.
Your meals are prepared with input from a qualified dietician - and individual diets can be arranged for you as required.
The Village Chaplain is based in the Hospital and visits on a regular basis. The Chaplain is available for counselling and spiritual guidance. A service of worship is held in the hospital regularly and daily in the Rest Home at 10am

Residents are offered a wide range of activities for their enjoyment, social interaction and to maintain mobility and develop skills. There is access to recreation, exercise and leisure activities, including . . .

Valuables. We have limited storage, so ask that anything of significant value be left with family or friends. While we ask people not to have valuables or money in their rooms, personal effects brought in need to be insured by the resident or their family.
Fire: The Hospital has smoke detectors and sprinklers. Should you hear an alarm, please stay where you are. Our fully trained staff have fire evacuation procedures in place - you can feel safe in their hands.
Visitors Book: Held at the main entrance, we have a visitor signing in/out book which is monitored. This helps to ensure the safety of all our people.
BEING GOOD NEIGHBOURS
Please do not smoke within our building - we do have a smoking area for you..
We ask that you respect your neighbours by not having your TV or radio on too loudly.

The Selwyn Foundation has been around for a very long time.
The Selwyn Foundation is an independent, faith-based New Zealand registered charity providing services to older people and their families. We have been leading the way in improving the quality of life of our elders for over sixty five years. As pioneers of the retirement village model and of rest home care in this country, we are uniquely experienced in providing residential care, independent retirement living and community outreach services for older adults.
With the dramatic rise of New Zealand's ageing population, the work of The Selwyn Foundation is more important than ever. Building on our achievements to date — and in keeping with our original Mission to provide quality care for elders — we will continue to innovate, diversify and offer a continuum of flexible care options that meet the present and future needs of ageing people and their families.
In keeping with our mission:
To deliver quality services that are responsive to the ageing person and their family, ensuring that our charitable outreach supports those who are vulnerable or in need.
Our activities are grouped in four key areas:
Enhancing the lives of elders who are vulnerable or in need.
To support our mission we reappraised our definition of 'vulnerability' and developed new, practical ideas on how our charitable mission could affect the quality of life of older people. We identified three particular areas where our help can make a substantial difference to those in need:
• Social isolation/loneliness
• Affordable housing
• Hardship support
These priorities are funded through surpluses derived from the various Selwyn villages, community services and educational functions, and through fundraising, donations, bequests, and sponsorship initiatives and in the future surpluses from commercial partnerships. We have partnered with Auckland Council to further build on our affordable housing goals in addition to our 81 rentals.

The Selwyn Institute takes a holistic approach to the wellbeing of older people and helps inform our charitable and business functions through knowledge-sharing, research, trials, innovations, and technology development.

Helping older people to remain connected through our Selwyn Centres, providing cost effective transport, health and fitness programmes, and providing products and services that they both need and want. All of this delivered through The Selwyn Way – our approach to care.
