Ranfurly Veterans Home & Hospital
|
RANFURLY VETERANS HOME & HOSPITAL opened in 1903, is still caring for those in need. Originally built for veterans of the South African War we now specialize in the care of men over the age of 65 years, while retaining a special interest in ex military personnel. We are a non-profit making organization governed by The Ranfurly Trust.
____________________________________________________________________ REST HOME CARE We aim to provide residents of Ranfurly with quality aged living in a comfortable environment that supports individuality, personal choice and independence. We have an 69 bed rest home at 539 Mt Albert Road, Three Kings. Each person has the privacy of a single room with their own access to our extensive grounds and gardens. Facilities are shared. ____________________________________________________________________ CARING FOR YOU It is our intention to make your time with us as enjoyable as possible. Our managers are available to talk through any concerns you may have and to assist you with any problems that may arise. YOUR ROOM Your room is your private space. You are welcome to have personal pictures or photographs hung, colour it with your own duvet, cushions, special chair or small TV set. Our friendly staff will advise what items may be suitable in your room in order to make it a safe environment for you. TELEPHONES There are public telephones for residents to use in each of the rest home wings. You may wish to have your own telephone installed. You would be responsible for paying any private telephone rental charges to the provider. VISITORS Your family and friends are welcome to visit at any time. For security reasons the main doors are locked around 9.00 pm, but access can still be gained to the facility by use of the call-bell situated at the entranceway. ADMINISTRATION & RECEPTION Our administration office takes responsibility for money-matters, will put your valuables into safe-keeping and liaise with your family regarding the financial aspect of your care. The Administration Manager/Accountant will help and guide you through any personal financial queries you may have. The friendly reception staff are on hand to assist and answer any questions. They can direct you to the right area for specialized needs, will post your mail, order your newspaper if required, and also manage your personal spending allowance. They staff the canteen which is opened Monday to Friday for ½ an hour. The Canteen stocks basic requirements such as toiletries, sweets, drinks, and other small items that residents may like to purchase. CLINICAL CARE We have a Clinical Manager on duty Monday to Friday. Her role, assisted by a Care Co-ordinator is to ensure policies and procedures are followed and to be on-call 24/7 to assist and mentor staff as required. Our senior registered nurses are on morning shifts Monday to Friday. All other shifts have either a registered or senior enrolled nurse on duty. The role of these nurses is to supervise and manage the care of each resident and to assist and direct the Caregivers as required. We have a wonderful group of cheerful persons who are our caregivers. They provide whatever help is required with activities of daily living – showering, toileting, dressing, shaving, help with mobility and distribution of medications under the guidance of registered staff. DOCTORS Two medical officers visit the complex regularly and hold clinics for those requiring their services. MEALS All meals are prepared on site in our own kitchen 7 days a week. There are summer and winter menu options which change with the seasons. Monthly menus are planned with no repetition of meals during that time. The rest home has a large dining room where residents take their meals. If someone is unwell a tray service will be arranged and delivered to their rooms. Serving times are 8.00 am breakfast, 12.00 noon lunch and 5.00 pm in the evening when the main meal of the day is provided. Morning, afternoon tea and supper are also provided. There are also ‘snack vending’ machines for those who may wish to purchase items. Special dietary needs are also catered for and all menus prepared under the guidance of a nutritionist. COMFORT AREAS There are small lounges tucked at the end of the wings overlooking the hustle and bustle of suburban Auckland. Always something of interest to see, residents enjoy these areas to soak up the sun, stay warm in winter or merely have a chat with family & friends. In the summer months our garden pergola is also a pleasant meeting place to sit with family and friends. SPECIAL PLACES There are several special places which are well frequented by our residents. - The Drop-in Centre is the meeting place where a wide range of activities take place, and puzzlers meet each morning to disseminate their brain skills over the crossword and other puzzles before enjoying a cuppa and a catch up on the daily news. The Drop-in Centre has a selection of easy chairs, a bowls lane, large snooker table, card table(s) and other recreational aids. - Our library has a wide selection of reading matter, some books with large print, and large tables where papers can be spread out for ease of reading. The grand piano is used regularly by visiting pianists who play for residents’ pleasure, and the church service is also held here. - The TV lounge is separate and offers the opportunity to view not only the basic channels, but also the SKY network. There is a big screen for good viewing. DVD’s are played in the TV lounge on a regular basis. - The recreation hall is a large area which is used for special functions, meetings, and other diverse purposes as the need arises. Commonly referred to as the 'Rec Hall' this area has been used for weddings, funerals, parties, dances, garage sales and visiting guest speakers. NO NEED FOR ALARM! There are smoke detectors and fire alarms fitted throughout the area, together with sprinklers. All staff are fully trained in fire procedures and if you follow their instructions your safety will not be compromised should a fire occur. CHAPLAIN We have a visiting chaplain from the Diocese of Auckland who calls regularly, conducts church services and is available to those who are wishing to have a conversation with the chaplain. A second chaplaincy visitor spends time twice a week with residents. PHYSIOTHERAPY Our own registered physiotherapist provides physiotherapy assessments, treatment and rehabilitation services. Together with a physiotherapy aide they work with residents either individually or as a group to assist them to regain and maintain strength and mobility. The physio gym is a well equipped area – another friendly meeting place for those requiring these services. HAIRDRESSING / PODIATRY A hairdresser (barber) calls weekly to cut our male residents’ hair and trim beards etc. When required a hairdresser is available to cut, shampoo, colour and perm our ladies’ hair. A podiatrist also makes regular visits to ensure that everyone’s feet are well cared for. The cost of these services are keep to a minimum as these are additional charges which will be your responsibility. If podiatry services are prescribed by the doctor no charge will be incurred. SMOKING Smoking is permitted in designated smoking areas around the complex. Residents are not permitted to smoke in their rooms, and are asked to be mindful of others and not light-up unless in the designated smoking areas, or outdoors. ACTIVITIES Our own occupational therapist, supported by a willing team of activity co-ordinators organize a wide range of recreational events for your enjoyment. These include, but are not limited to, the daily newspaper reading, lunch outings to various RSA clubs, a monthly birthday party celebration, cooking, walking, shopping trips, mystery tours, bowling tournaments, singing, dancing, reminiscing, swimming as well as concerts by visiting artists, on a regular basis. You are welcome to attend all of the activities provided, but will not be pressed to do so if you prefer not to participate. Special events such as Easter, St Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and mid-year Christmas are given special priority when extra effort is made to ensure a memorable occasion can be celebrated by all. Some serious fun occurs at these times! It is appreciated that those who have experienced life have a wealth of stories and memories to share and time is always available for those who wish to have a private discussion with a staff member or are prepared to share their stories with others. PETS We have three cats in residence as well as budgies and gold fish. Dogs visit regularly together with other pets that sometimes accompany visitors. From time to time we have residents who have much loved pets they would like to bring with them. We are happy to discuss this possibility but families must be prepared to provide all back up support necessary and take over the animal’s care should circumstances change. | Ranfurly home is long established, full of old world charm and endowed with some interesting historic memorabilia. It is set in spacious grounds in the heart of suburban Auckland. It is a large facility with the rest home, hospital and secure unit caring for a total of 130 residents. Our staff are from various backgrounds with an eclectic mix of personalities and ethnicities which work very harmoniously together. Many of our staff have years of long service with us.
Most of our residents are male but ladies are also very welcome in our home (except in the secure unit which is male only.) Many find this a comfortable and compatible living situation as there is no shortage of female company provided by staff and visitors. An iconic landmark, known to most Aucklanders, Ranfurly stands alone as a proud organization that has been looking after the needs of those who served and is now also providing specialised care for the wider community. |
