About Abingdon Village
Abingdon Retirement Village offers old-world English country charm, right in the centre of Whanganui.
Abingdon’s attractive one-bedroom villas are set on secluded private grounds, nestled amongst native trees and beautiful sunny gardens overlooking the Whanganui township.
The 14 villas at Abingdon Village surround the historic Abingdon House, designed by famous Kiwi architect James Walter Chapman-Taylor. The house is now the village’s community centre and includes a shared kitchen, dining room, and two shared lounges. There are many social occasions and friendly card games enjoyed here!
Each of the one bedroom villas is well set out, each with its own beautiful outlook. All villas include:
- kitchen and laundry
- wet floor bathroom
- large double wardrobe
- a heat pump/air conditioning unit
- carpet and slip resistant vinyl flooring
- a private courtyard/garden area
- quality curtains or blinds.
One of the best things about a move to Abingdon Village is that you can focus on enjoying your retirement while we take care of the rest. We’ll look after the property maintenance and gardening; enjoying a community living environment.
At Abingdon Village, we offer independent retirement living, while nearby Kōwhainui Home offers both short and long term rest home care, specialist hospital care as well as a day programme.

Special features
The icing on the cake for the residents of Enliven’s Abingdon Village is knowing that by purchasing a villa, they’re investing in the future. As a not-for-profit organisation, all the proceeds from the sale of Enliven’s retirement villas and apartments are invested back into Enliven facilities, or into social services for vulnerable children and families provided by Family Works, which is also part of Presbyterian Support Central.

Mythbusting - Retirement Villages are a rip-off
Why it’s considered a worthwhile investment.
NOTE: The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (The Act) is designed to provide improved protection for people who 'buy' into a retirement village. If you intend to 'purchase' you must get independent legal advice before signing your occupation right agreement as required under The Act. Some Retirement Village type facilities are not required to register under The Act so different legal requirements apply. Please make sure you investigate fully.
In some villages there may be some Retirement Village units that have multiple uses e.g. a Serviced Apartment may also be used as a Residential Care Suite. The same unit may therefore show in several places on Eldernet.
