Kaumātua programmes
There are people all over New Zealand working to make their communities vibrant, connected, and supportive places to live. Regardless of where in the country you are, you’ll find services, groups, programmes, and retailers to help you connect with people living in your community; these are often grass-roots groups created specifically for the needs of the people living in the community. Many groups provide a place for like-minded people to come together, enjoy each other’s company and participate in various social activities.
It’s likely you already use some of these services regularly, like libraries, council facilities or community hub. Various Kaumātua services can be accessed around the country. These Kaupapa Māori services may include clinics, traditional practices, and whanau health hui, and day programmes. You’ll also find a range of culture-led services across New Zealand too. These services offer a range of programmes and activities to connect people together and nurture their cultural and social needs.
All these services provide much-needed help to their communities – and are often great sources of information. You’ll find many of these groups are run by volunteers; in fact, you might want to volunteer too. Head along to one of the services listed below to see what you can do for each other!
