Leaky building, moldy rooms, lousy food

My mum lives here and it was a real bad decision. She lived in a room that had black mould in the carpet for a few years and then was moved into another room. When I visit her after rainy days she has 2 buckets collecting drips, and she has another apartment above her! There is also mould in the bedroom cupboards from leaks.
Apart from food that she always complains about, the rest home forced her to change her phone when they changed to an internet phone service and she now struggles to hear on the phone. The rest home has a sky/tv package in her rental agreement and when her tv packed up they said she would be quicker to buy another tv than wait for the rest home to get a replacement.

Mum originally bought her own apartment and then made a substantial loss on her investment when she sold it back to the rest home (she had no choice but accept their offer).

While the staff are good and do their best on the limited budget, this is not the retirement I would want for my mum.


Provider response:

The original trust owner of Ropata went into liquidation. The current operator took over, and has been credited to provide rest home care. The operator brought her leaky unit off the resident, and moved the resident to another room at the residents request.
At the time the resident changed rooms, she declined Ropata's offer of a new TV, stating she wishes to remain with her own personal TV. After the move the residents TV ceased to work and asked for Ropata to supply a TV. Ropata informed the resident that a TV would be ordered as they are not an off the shelf TV, as this may take some time to come from the manufactures. Ropata suggested if the resident was unhappy with the time delay, that maybe a family member could supply one in the interim.
Work is continuing to fix the leaking issues, and there is no black mould present in any units or the building. Units have been redecorated and carpeted over the last 4 years.
Due to telecom suppliers discontinuing the copper cabling network in the near future, Ropata upgraded all the telephone systems to the new digital network for units and offices. These phones have been supplied by Ropata at no cost to residents.

Ropata Lodge provides assisted supported living care for the elderly.

Some residents will be quite independent and others will require more personal care and / or nursing assistance.

Generally the Ropata has a few apartments available for short term stays for respite or convalescent care. This service is ideal for those people who may need care and support following hospital discharge or perhaps when their caregiver and / or family members are away on holiday. Clients of ACC and also private medical schemes use the services of Ropata Lodge from time to time.

Ropata Lodge encourages residents to participate in activities of their choice. Our vision is for Ropata to be interacting with the community on many levels.

In-house programmes include: in-door bowls; bingo; quizzes; puzzles.

Groups of residents meet at their leisure for cards, scrabble and other games.

Fireside drinks are held on a fortnightly basis with finger food and entertainment provided.

Choirs and musical performers are invited to perform in the atrium on a regular basis.

A strong sense of belonging makes it easy for family members to organise additional activities such as video/DVD nights, craft workshops and outings.

Details about Meals Wholesome, nutritious meals and home baking are a feature at Ropata. Breakfast is served to individual apartments with lunch and tea served in the dining room. When necessary meals can be delivered to residents in their apartment.
Staffing Qualifications and Details A full time manager handles the day to day running, with support staff of Health Care Assistants, kitchen and cleaning staff.
What's included in your fees and what's not Respite / Convalescent Care fees depend on the level of care and support necessary for the welfare of the respite / convalescent care person. Rental Fee includes: care support and supervision; Call system; Provision of all meals; Morning and afternoon tea; Supply and cleaning of all linen; Weekly cleaning of apartment; Use of residents laundry; Heating of apartments and common areas; Lighting and electricity of common areas; Cleaning of common areas; Quarterly health checks and management of pharmacy dispensed medications.
