On December 9th during one of his last public engagements as Prime Minister of New Zealand and Minister of Tourism, Hon. John Key officially opened The Russley Homestead. The architecturally designed community centre on the site of the former Russley Hotel - first opened 50 years ago in December 1964 by then Minister of Tourism, Hon E J Eyre.
This magnificent facility which resembles a Country Club has all the facilities of a resort.
Like the old hotel, the new Homestead has areas purpose-built for entertainment and socialising including a boutique 40 tiered seat cinema and a café and brasserie.
Upstairs there is an intimate lounge, billiard and pool tables, bar, hair salon, beauty therapy rooms, computer room, an arts & craft area.
Village director, Graham Wilkinson, says the brief for the build recognised the importance of the history of the site. "The Russley Hotel was of huge significance to Christchurch. We wanted to preserve this by creating a sophisticated country club experience that captures some of the old hotel's warmth and ambience.
Also underway is the last of the apartment complexes, The Sefton which includes the swimming pool & spa. When finished later in 2017, these will bring units at the village to a total of 108. The last phase of the development on the site is the boutique age-care facility and serviced apartments that will provide residents with a full range of care and support services. Building will start this year.
Private, spacious apartments and villas, award-winning gardens and dedicated staff all working to deliver the unique lifestyle you’re looking for. Since you’ll be living near the central city, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy there too, whether you like shopping, arts and crafts or spending time with loved ones.
You’ll make good friends and be part of an amazing community, and with our committed, professional team available to take care of assist you if needed, you can get on with living life to the fullest.
Having all the villa's differently designed really gives the village a character that you don't usually see in other villages.

We love the letter boxes in the Pergolas.

Spaciousness and class there was only one place I was coming to.

I never thought when I used to drink at the old Russley Hotel that I would end up living here one day.

I rang another resident before we committed ourselves and it confirmed what we thought.

Everyone is so friendly.

What a relief that our parents are in such a secure environment.

The Homestead

The Grand Opening of The Russley Village Homestead on Friday 9th December 2016 was like the facility itself - elegant and engaging.

At the heart of the Homestead resides ABODE Café & Brasserie, a culinary delight that combines fresh, fulsome and creative fare with customer service that is second-to-none. Inspired by traditional recipes with a contemporary twist, the menu is flexible, and caters for different tastes and preferences.  There are quintessential Kiwi dishes including hearty Shepherd's Pie and a flavoursome range of soups, with some international culinary options on offer too.

The outstanding and conscientious team is led by Executive Chef Ganesh Kesavan and Maitre'D Rocio Del Valle Garcia.  With a Degree in International Protocol, Rocio has worked in the hospitality industry for a decade and is relishing the opportunity to be in such a dynamic role.

Chef Ganesh enjoys a sole charge position where he overseas preparation, cooking and administration - a multifaceted role that he thrives in.  I love the variety of work at ABODE

“The management team and the residents take great pride in maintaining the beauty and the relaxed ambiance of The Russley Village. This is a unique village, which has set a new standard for retirement living in New Zealand.  We have captured its individuality throughout our residential and leisure facilities and have created carefully thought-out park-like grounds to complete the quality look and feel of village life here.”

Viewing will impress!

NOTE: The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (The Act) is designed to provide improved protection for people who ‘buy’ into a retirement village. If you intend to ‘purchase’ you must get independent legal advice before signing your occupation right agreement as required under The Act. Some Retirement Village type facilities are not required to register under The Act so different legal requirements apply. Please make sure you investigate fully.

In some villages there may be some Retirement Village units that have multiple uses e.g. a Serviced Apartment may also be used as a Residential Care Suite. The same unit may therefore show in several places on Eldernet. The DHB Shared Services website provides additional information about this service.
