Have the freedom to choose your retirement.

Hillsborough Heights is a friendly, caring retirement village situated on beautifully landscaped gardens in the suburb of Mount Roskill, offering panoramic 360 degree views over Auckland.

Residents have the choice of living in either one of 176 independent residential units, or one of 42 serviced apartments - which offer independent living with a tailored support package. Delicious lunches and dinners are served by the chef in the village’s own restaurant. All units and apartments provide residents with private, comfortable living and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that 24-hour emergency help is available at the touch of a button using the emergency call system installed in all units.

"When Mum was still at home we'd have to spend time doing the vacuuming, the laundry and things like that. Now we come in, enjoy each other's company and make the most of every moment we have together," says daughter of a Serviced Apartment resident.

Family, friends and excellent care
Mother and daughter retire to the same lovely village
Ellen Butland had already decided to retire to Hillsborough Heights village while her mother Joan was still active in her own Wellsford home. At 90, Joan was very busy growing flowers and collecting stamps for her favourite charities, volunteering in the community, visiting with friends and driving the occasional ‘old person’ to doctor’s visits.
Ellen made the decision to move into the village with her eye on the future. She knew she wasn’t getting any younger, and driving to activities like housie and shopping was becoming a chore. She’d always lived on her own, but she wanted to make a move before she got properly ‘elderly’. She spent considerable time looking for just the right place before settling on Hillsborough Heights.
“There’s a lot of choice, some quite new villages,” Ellen explains. “But the new ones tend to be condominiums of several stories, which I didn’t care for. And they were way out of my price range, most of them.”
A new home in the same neighbourhood
What won Ellen over was the single-story villa that was available at Hillsborough Heights. It had a bit of garden, the village grounds were lovely and well cared for, and most of the activities she wanted to join were right there in walking distance. The village is situated in her familiar neighbourhood, so she didn’t have to learn all new streets and shopping centres.
Joan had a fall
An active member of her community, with lots of old friends, it wasn’t until Joan fell and broke her tailbone that she considered leaving her home in Wellsford. Ellen, already comfortably established in the Village, urged her to come down for a visit and look around for herself. Joan explains:
“She was fed up with driving all that way to see me – it really took it out of her. So I came for a visit – it was the practical, sensible thing to do. I took a tour of the village in a wheelchair the management provided!”
A serviced apartment was just the ticket
Joan knew that not only did she need regular assistance as she recovered from her injury, she also expected to need more care as she got older. With a serviced apartment, she could have everything provided – cleaning service, meals in the dining room and medical care if she needed it.
What she found at Hillsborough Heights was a well set up apartment that was comfortable and cosy, with the bonus of a great view. Living right near her daughter was also an attraction.
“I’m happy and settled in now, and I’ve met people and joined in activities. It’s all so convenient – prescriptions can be phoned through and delivered.”
New friends close by
For Ellen, the move has been very enjoyable. Admitting she’s a bit shy, she has ventured out slowly to get acquainted with her neighbours and join in the village activities. She loves being able to walk to housie, and now counts many residents as her friends.
She’s impressed with the staff at Hillsborough, and the way they ensure everything runs smoothly. The kitchen staff produce nice food, the office team is friendly and genuine, and the gardeners maintain the grounds to perfection.
Joan looks after her own little bit of garden, but when she needs help with things like tree-trimming she just puts in a request.

“They come and do the job and clear all the rubbish away afterwards. I can go for a walk around the village and enjoy all the nice flowers the residents grow, and if I see a weed – I don’t have to stop and pull it out!”
Family ties maintained
Living in walking distance to one another has been a bonus for both mother and daughter. Ellen and Joan meet for afternoon tea nearly every day, and discuss their projects and plans. They share a commitment to charitable activities, with Joan still sorting and trimming stamps to raise funds for the Leprosy Mission, and Ellen helping in their office and selling her knitted slippers at the Titirangi market. Ellen explains:
Advice and recommendation
To anyone looking for a place to retire, both Ellen and her mother advise having a good look around. Depending on age and medical needs, Metlifecare has facilities for every level of care and for most budgets.
Joan says she’s never been bored – there’s always something to do at Hillsborough Heights. She loves to swim in the village pool, and often joins the bus trips away. She’s very aware that even though she’s still active, at nearly 93 she’s going to need more care sometime in the future. What gives her confidence is that when the time comes, a move to another of Metlifecare’s villages with a hospital will be a relatively easy transition.
“Our village is well established and well maintained - it’s got an older style that I like, and seems to be less expensive than the newer places. And the nursing staff are really tremendous – I’d recommend them to anyone.”

NOTE: The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (The Act) is designed to provide improved protection for people who ‘buy’ into a retirement village. If you intend to ‘purchase’ you must get independent legal advice before signing your occupation right agreement as required under The Act. Some Retirement Village type facilities are not required to register under The Act so different legal requirements apply. Please make sure you investigate fully.

In some villages there may be some Retirement Village units that have multiple uses e.g. a Serviced Apartment may also be used as a Residential Care Suite. The same unit may therefore show in several places on Eldernet.
