Ohope Beach Care is a 25 bed Secure Dementia unit with 11 Resthome beds.
We are privately owned by Adrian Davies who lives in Auckland.
AND! we are by the BEACH!!!!
Our mission statement developed some time ago and still relevant to day is as follows:
Ohope Beach Care will provide an environment in which our Residents may live in an atmosphere of respect and friendship, have their physical, emotional and cultural needs met so that the Residents well being is maintained or enhanced.

Registered Nurse 56 Yes Ravi is our Clinical Manager, he has five years experience in a Rest home in Auckland as a Clinical Manager. Neilmar is a Registered Nurse with a BS in Nursing and a PG Cert Applied Practice. (Health Science is his specialty)
Healthcare Assistants/Caregivers 32 Yes We have three shifts with three carers at night, four in the day time and four in the afternoon until 9.30pm when three carers will cover. They have or are training towards the LCP Dementia qualification with Career Force.This is ongoing.
Physiotherapist Yes Our Physiotherapist comes to us from the Hospital after a referal has been made through the GP
Own Social Worker Yes We are in constant communication with the Mental Health and Support Nett Teams in Whakatane. They come frequently to monitor the health of our clients.
Diversional Therapist 70 Yes We have a two Qualified Diversional Therapists. Missy Foulkes has 10 years experience. Our other DT is newly qualified and will cover during absences of the active DT.
Activities Co-ordinator Yes
Hairdresser 3 Yes Our Hairdresser is also our Tea time cook so she knows everyone really well she comes once every two weeks. She does cuts and sets for a very reasonable rate.
Podiatrist Yes Everyone sees the podiatrist once a month. They come to the rest home which is a very convenient service for us
Dietitian Yes Our Menus are reviewed every two years using a qualified dietitian or earlier if we need advice.

Chaplain/Spiritual Advisor Yes We have all denominations visit at different times. We have three services at the home in the month.These are very well accepted.

End of Life/Palliative Care Yes We are not Hospital level but we can do and have done End of life Care for long term clients. It is nice that they can end their days with people they know and have cared for them.
Oxygen Management Yes We do provide basic oxygen management anything further than this we would require and ambulance.
Surgical Followup Yes We follow up with appointments after surgery has been performed on any of our residents this may mean a trip to the hosipital for specialist appointments
Wound Care Yes We do our own wound management here in consultation with the Doctor, or we may be able to engage the District nurse for an ACC referal for wound care if we are able
Diabetic Care Yes We can consult with the diabetic nurse at Whakatane hospital who will come over or send some guidelines depending on the severity of the diabeties
Continence Advisor Yes There is a continence Nurse at Whakatane hospital which we can source. We also use Ebos products for incontinence and there rep will give the staff an inservce on the best and most effective use of the incontinence products.
Infection Control Yes Our Registered Nurse is our Infection control Nurse he is incharge of seeing that all infection guidelines are up held
Specialised Dementia Care Yes We have a 25 bed secure specialised Dementia Unit. All of our staff are trained specifically in this specialised area. We provide respite for families in the dementia Unit if required
Gerontological Care Yes There are several Gerontologists that look after the Dementia residents at Ohope Beach Care. They are based in Tauranga but visit frequently
Urology Yes These specialists can be sourced if required.
Community Health Yes We are in constant contact with the community Mental Health team. They are always willing to come over and discuss clients needs with us.
Clinical Manager Yes Ravi has extensive knowledge in this field
Other Nursing Specialities Yes We have a Registered Nurse, Neilmar who is from the Philippines. He has a lot of nursing experience here and in Australia. All our caregivers are trained in Dementia care.
Other Post Graduate Specialities Yes We encourage trainee nurses to come and do some practical work with us. Waiariki Polytechnic send trainees. We have nurses from Awanuiarangi the university in Whakatane. They get a good base knowledge of Dementia and how to work with the Dementia Clien

Respite Yes We encourage Respite care. Bed availability features here. We apply to Support Nett for top up funding, this means that the family do not have to pay the short fall between the carer support allocation and the actual daily charge.

Policy for management of challenging behaviour Yes We have trained staff specialising in the art of de-escalating technics to be tried when faced with Challenging behaviors. These behaviours are monitored closely by the Caregivers, Nurse, Doctor and the Mental Health team.
Confused Residents Yes Some times we are presented with someone with a Delirium and this can be a challenge which may cause more confusion than normal.
Lounges/seating areas Yes We have outside areas and lounge which most clients seem to congregate in.
Outings Yes We have a 11 seater van which we use for outings. We have a regular outing every Friday when they travel around the town and out some where for an icecream.Our Van seems to go out at least twice a week. We have a man who comes weekly to play the piano.
Rural Setting No NO we're at the BEACH!!!!!!!!!!! Even Better. We do have a lovely mural painted by our artist gardener that gives the feeling of being able to be on a tropical Island, have a look in the photo section.
Smokers Room Yes We do not encourage smoking but we have outside areas that smokers can go
Smoking Permitted Yes You can't take away a habit of a life time, but it does not mean that you have to like it!
Semi-Secure Yes We are fully secure we have key pad locks on all exit doors. We have two fully fenced outdoor areas where residents can wander at their leisure without supervision and be safe but give the feeling of being in control.
Sprinklers Yes Fully sprinklered and the Ohope Fire Station is right next door!!

Details re Meals All our meals are cooked on the premises by our two very competent cooks one of our cooks has been with us for many years and cooks the older style meal whereas our other cook is younger and uses a lot of flavours in her meals which is very popular as well. The Manager has resthome cooking experience and sometimes you will see her cooking.
Staffing Details Our Staff turnover is low and many staff members have been here a long time. The Manager can cover all shifts if need be. This gives her an insight into how things are being run and if there is any need for any changes to be made.
