Special Features
Special Features
Elmwood House is an architecturally purpose designed facility built in full accordance with the Health Department requirements for the residential care of the elderly. It is spacious light and open. The grounds are attractively planted with shrubs and annuals and are well maintained. Large windows and sliding doors give views over the gardens and easy indoor-outdoor access.

Care has been taken in the design of the Facility to ensure that there is plenty of space for residents to move around through the home and garden freely and unobstructed. The inner courtyards and the resulting openness of the main living areas mean that staff can easily observe the comings and goings. Office areas also have large expanses of window enabling staff to be seen by residents and therefore providing a reassuring presence.

The design elements combined with our skilled staff management and care of residents mean that Elmwood House has a serene and dignified feel. This is observable in the dressing and grooming of our residents. We take particular care the ensure that our residents are dressed and groomed according to how they would usually present themselves eg applying makeup and nail polish, attending the hairdresser, being dressed in ‘smart casual’ attire, colour co-ordinated, wearing a tie, stockings etc where appropriate are very important components to helping our residents retain their dignity.
All Staff are trained specifically in the care of those suffering dementia and memory loss.
Management and Staff have a committment to providing the highest quality care, with staff having a particular compassion and empathy for the Residents.
.

VISITING
We encourage families to treat Elmwood as an extension of their own home and as such, families and friends are welcome at anytime.
We invite you to use family areas such as the tea and coffee making area. You are also welcome to join us for meals (preferably not breakfast). At the time of admission we know that you will have lots of questions. For many couples the admission of a partner to Elmwood House also raises issues including loneliness. Some people like to visit frequently whilst for others visiting us is sometimes more difficult. We will do our best to answer your questions and give you support.

Visitors will appreciate that a resident suffering from Alzheimer’s and similar disorders may display behaviour, which under normal circumstances may be considered inappropriate. Your acceptance of such occurrences is an important part of the resident’s ongoing therapy.

ELMWOOD HOUSE PHILOSOPHY

The management and staff are committed to quality care with the residents needs being met in an environment in which they feel safe, comfortable and welcome.
The residents individual physical (tinana), psychological (hinengaro), spiritual (wairua) and family (whanau) needs and choices are recognised and therefore we are committed to holistic health, in respect to different races and ethnic groups having different perceptions of and reactions to health and illness.

We recognise that our residents are part of a wider community and will endeavour that links are maintained on an individual basis as well as with the input of the multidisciplinary team to maximise their potential, independence and quality of life.
We believe that our business must be operated using the
principles of total quality management and financial control, therefore providing a client focused service which continually seeks for ways to improve the delivery of our service.

Interests & Activities
Interests & Activities
The activity programme at Elmwood House is person centred so components such as communication knowing the residents life story, recognising their sexuality, respecting and understanding their spirituality, culture beliefs and values are important. The programme covers creative, intellectual, simple tasks, social contact and individual components.

The varying levels of dependence are taken into consideration when designing specific and flexible programmes. All such programmes are planned with due regard to minimising restraint and behaviour management.

Each resident has a recreation plan which has been compiled around their activity needs, capabilities and preferences. This ensures that the resident receives at least eight hours per week of activities based on the plan.

Examples of the types of therapies involved on our programme are; music (individual, group, outside occasions, background music where appropriate) validation, water therapy, craft, foot bath and massage, pet therapy, reflexology (available two hours weekly based on resident’s individual needs) aromatherapy, doll therapy, reminiscence, reality orientation, art therapy and entertainment (groups from locals service clubs, schools and kindergartens visit frequently). Out side excursions in the Home’s minibus are arranged to a variety of venues and locations.

Note: Activities that occur as part of our day to day care giving activities ie talking to residents, watching TV, listening to the radio are not included within the activity programme.

Staffing qualifications and details NURSING CARE A Registered Nurse is on duty at all times. Health Care Assistants, assist the Registered Nurse to deliver care with the support of the Clinical Manger or "On Call" RN. Staff are selected for their true compassion and an empathy that comes from the heart. DOMESTIC STAFF Our domestic staff are very much part of the caring team. They also need to relate well to our residents. Often residents join them in little ways doing domestic activities. MEDICAL CARE Residents may retain their own doctor although the facility has a contracted GP who provides onsite clinics twice a week.
Details about meals We have an ‘open door’ policy regarding food. Residents may want to eat at any time of the day or night and staff learn to be responsive to each resident’s requirements. The kitchen, which has a domestic appearance, has a large servery hatch which makes it possible for residents to observe the activity in the kitchen and the preparation of food. Regular meal times are: breakfast 7-8.15am, Dinner 12 midday, Tea 5-530pm. Morning, afternoon tea and supper are also served. A minimum amount of food is kept in residents rooms.
Associated Complexes We are proud to be part of The Napier District Masonic Trust family, where in Taradale they have rest home and continuing care wing. The education programme for Elmwood staff is combined with that of the Taradale staff for the most part.
