Vision: For New Zealand society to recognise, value and support people living with dementia.

Mission: Kia piki te ora mo nga tangata mate porewarewa. To make life better for all people affected by dementia.

Purpose: Providing support, education and advocacy to all people in the Wellington region who are affected by dementia.

Our four community workers and educator work in Wellington, Porirua, Hutt Valley, and Kapiti Coast. Our two service offices are located in Petone and Waikanae.

Alzheimers Wellington is an inclusive non-profit organisation dedicated to making life better for all people in the Wellington region affected by dementia.

We provide information, ongoing support, advice, education and personal advocacy for people with dementia, their carers, family and whanau. Anyone can refer people to our service.

Our staff are well trained, caring and knowledgeable about the many issues arising from a diagnosis of dementia. Our services are client-centered – you decide what is best for you.

Our support services are for those living with a diagnosis of dementia and also those affected by dementia.

Are you affected by dementia?

If you are supporting a family member with dementia or have a friend or neighbour with dementia, then the answer is yes, you are affected by dementia.


The symptoms of dementia progress over time and affect not just memory but the ability to undertake daily tasks, communication, mood and emotion.

Education - for supporters:

Alzheimers Wellington invites you to join an education workshops for family and friends of people with a dementia. Prior registration for workshops is essential.

Dementia Essentials 101:

Are you supporting a person with a dementia? (and would like to be better informed)

This is a 3 session course that will assist you to;

• Learn about the causes and symptoms of dementia
• Understand the changes in behaviour that may occur
• Consider financial and legal implications
• Develop your skills as a supporter
• Meet others in a similar situation

held at The Bucket Tree, Tawa
February 25th, March 3rd and 10th (Thursdays)

Hutt Valley
held at Alfred Coles House, Petone
May 10th, 17th, 31st (Tuesdays)

Each session runs 10.30am to 2.30pm


Dementia Essentials 102:

This 3 session course will assist you to:
• Understand and respond positively to changes as
dementia progresses
• Become well resourced to maintain safety
• Be prepared for the future
• Meet others in a similar situation

There is no charge for the workshop and and a light lunch
is included. (a suggested koha of $10.00 would be welcome)


Education - for people with a dementia

Our Living Well After Diagnosis Workshops are run on a regular basis and aim for people with dementia to:
. gain more understanding about memory loss
. meet others in a similar situation
. pick up tips on managing problems associated with memory loss

These workshops are run throughout the year and attendance is by invitation from your Alzheimers Wellington Community Worker. For more information call 0800 004 001

A small charge of $10 per day applies to cover lunch and venue hire costs. Koha is always gratefully accepted.


Supporter Meetings - for Carers

The aim of these meetings is to provide a safe environment in which people who are supporting a person affected by a dementia can meet and share their experiences. By meeting together it helps us to understand that we are not alone.

Alzheimers Wellington recognises the vast range of skills and abilities of informal carers and these meetings provide a forum to learn from each other.

You will hear information, ideas and hints that will help.

2nd Monday each month, 10am - Noon (not held in January)
Malvina Major Retirement Village
Burma Road, Johnsonville

Porirua Supporter Group
2nd Thursday each month, 10:30am - Noon (not held in January)
Kemp Home and Hospital
Te Pene Avenue, Titahi Bay, Porirua

Kapiti Supporter Group
Monthly on 2nd Thursday 1:30 - 3.30pm (venue varies)
Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct
Meetings are held at:
Kapiti Community Centre, 15 Ngahina Street, Paraparaumu

Mar, May, July, Sept, Nov
Meetings are held at:
Parklands Social Centre, Off Sylvan Ave., Waikanae

A combined group will be held in December.

Lunch No Negotiable No Self supporter groups are available for people who are at varying stages of the journey with a dementia.Lunch groups are held in Petone and Kaipti. Please call 0800 004 001 to discuss if attendance would be appropriate for you. Koha welcomed.
Club/Drop in Centre No Negotiable No Dementia resources are available from our Hutt Road offices. Books and DVD's are available on loan.
Other Social Support No Negotiable No Self supporter groups are available for people who are at varying stages of the journey with dementia.Social outings are made in the Hutt, Wellington and Kapiti. Please call 0800004001 to discuss if attendance would be appropriate for you. Koha welcomed.
