Wairarapa Organisation for Older Persons (WOOPS)
SERVICE & PROGRAMMES INCLUDE:
COFFEE MORNING
Held on the first Tuesday monthly (except January). Morning tea is provided, and transport available for those needing it. Raffles and a sales table help to cover costs.
ACCREDITED VISITING SERVICE
Run by WOOPS on the Wairarapa as an Age Concern programme. Volunteer visitors receive training/orientation and are then matched with an older person living in their own home or rest home, who they visit regularly. Ongoing training and support meetings are held.
SAFE WITH AGE
A driving awareness programme for the mature driver, developed by the Land Transport Safety Authority. During two 2 hour sessions, participants look at driving tasks, look at the ageing process as it relates to driving ability and develop strategies for safer driving. Courses are free and are run by trained volunteers.
THROUGH OTHER EYES
A workshop in which participants are instantly ‘ aged’ and given a series of tasks to perform, to enable them to gain an understanding of some of the problems older people and people with disabilities face in day to day life.
TOTAL MOBILITY
WOOPS is an authorised assessment agency for the Wellington Regional Council’s Total Mobility Scheme, which subsidises taxi costs for people unable to use Public Transport.
ALZHEIMER’S WAIRARAPA
WOOPS has facilitated the creation of the Alzheimer’s Society for the Wairarapa and currently hosts monthly support group meetings at our office at Solway Showground’s Fleet Street. The group provides information and support for carers and families.
ADVOCACY
We can provide assistance with application to WINZ, or support you with your request when dealing with government agencies.
RESOURCES
We hold a large library of books and videos on issues related to ageing. A number of Jigsaw puzzles are also available for borrowing. Members of the organisation make presentations to schools and interested groups, and make submissions on issues of importance.
LIFE TUBES
A life tube can speak for you when you can’t. A special tube contains vital personal information which may be accessed by emergency services in case of accident or illness. These cost $4.00, available from the WOOPS office.
WOOPS SUMMER CAMP
Provides a holiday for older people who otherwise may not have one. Camp runs for 5 days and includes a variety of activities and outings.
OUTINGS & SEMINARS
Arranged each month to cater to the interests of members.
LIVING WITH CONFIDENCE
A programme run in conjunction with the safer Community Councils aimed at reducing the fear of crime and assisting participants to build their won support networks. A large component of the course is self-defence.
AGE CONCERN
As an organisation associated with Age Concern NZ, WOOPS is able to have issues and concerns of older people raised at a national level, as well as receiving very valuable information from around the country and the world.
