What's New

Sumner Bays Union Trust Newsletter 22 May 2012

Hello everyone,

It’s a beautiful day today despite a frosty beginning.

Our usual programmes continue to operate and it is good to see how some of our newer projects are gathering momentum. Repairs are close to being completed on the Redcliffs Community Shed and we have a team of around a dozen men working on the building, ably coordinated by Reg Dalley. It’s great to see the number of guys who haven’t met each other before working together. Any enquiries about the Shed, please contact Reg on 384-3830 or email regenadal@snap.net.nz.

Mini Music continues to go well in Sumner and Redcliffs. The children enjoy themselves, and parents and caregivers get to connect with one another. Coffee & Conversationwhich meets immediately after Mini Music Redcliffs on Thursday mornings attracts up to a dozen people some weeks, with a group of people who reside at Edith Cavell Rest Home and Hospital in Sumner being picked up and brought along. My thanks to Lydia and Deborah for collecting the Cavell residents who like to come.

Shortly we will be starting a Sumner coffee group (not its final name), starting on Monday 11 June, 10.30 – 11.30 am in the Sumner Old School Hall kitchen at on Wiggins Street. A meeting of anyone who wishes to volunteer at this group will be held there on Monday 28 May 2012 at 10.30 am.

Redcliffs Coffee & Conversation is held every Thursday in the Redcliffs Union Church on Augusta Street from 10.30 a.m. until 12 noon. Mini Music is held in Sumner at the old school hall’s kitchen on Wiggins Street at 9.30 am Tuesdays of school terms and in Redcliffs in the Union Church at 9.30 am on Thursdays.

The Redcliffs Craft Group is held at 1 Bayview Road, Moncks Bay every Thursday from 1 – 3 pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and learn various crafts from our very experienced and friendly tutor.

The Rockers of Ages Choir continues to meet each Wednesday from 10.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. at the Sumner Union Church on Nayland Street. It is directed by The Muse’s Nikki Berry and Gary Easterbrook who are well known and highly regarded musical directors. I would thoroughly recommend you to join it if you enjoy singing. Sumner Silver Band practises each Thursday evening in the Redcliffs Union Church from 7 p.m. If you’re a budding brass musician or simply want to come along to listen you are warmly welcome to do so.

Great thanks to Bailey Peryman for coordinating the Van Asch Community Gardenover the summer and hopefully into the future. The garden has a loyal group of gardeners, including Van Asch Deaf Education Centre students who are involved. Contact Bailey if you’re keen to join in on pbperyman@gmail.com or 326-6927/021 122 7638. We’re always keen for more gardeners in Redcliffs too – contact Warren on 384-2866 or email him on wps20@yahoo.com. The Redcliffs Community Garden is located behind the Union Church on Augusta Street.

A plug for the Beryl McCombs Memorial Kidsfirst Kindergarten Redcliffs – Liz, Gary & Fiona are a great team of teachers working with children from the age of 3 until they go off to school. Numbers have been a bit low since the quakes so if you have children in this age group, consider coming to Redcliffs Kindergarten. Children of that age group seem to learn so much while playing.

Computing @ Redcliffs has attracted several students over the last few months. It will be returning to Redcliffs in three or four months’ time when tutor Lydia MacKinnon is back. My thanks to Lydia for her willingness and skills to teach this course.

Last but definitely not least, congratulations to Win Collins for her soon to be awarded Community Board Community Service Award. Win has volunteered in this community for many years and is truly worthy of such an award. Well done Win!
Warm regards, Eddie Hayes Community Development Worker Sumner Bays Union Trust
