What to plant in your winter garden

June is one of the most exciting gardening months on the calendar according to our friends at Palmers. Winter is the perfect time to plant some fruit trees in your garden, particularly citrus, apples, pears, plums, peaches and nectarines.

Flower Garden

Plant new seasons roses, Graham Thomas, Mary Rose, Getrude Jekyll, Sir Edmund Hillary and Ingrid Bergman.

For cheerful winter colour, now is the perfect time to plant Alyssum, Forget-Me-Not, Pansies, Viola, Polyanthus, Primula, Poppy, Sweetpea, Cyclamen, Hollyhock, Lobelia, Sweet William, Anemone, Candytuft and Bellis Daisy.

Now is the perfect time to prune out any thin and spindly growth on your Hydrangeas. Cut back strong shoots to 2-3 buds from the base.

Kitchen Garden

Plant your favourite seedlings such as; cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, winter lettuce, spinach and silverbeet.

Garlic and shallot bulb is perfect for this season and can be planted until late July.

Feed all citrus trees with Palmers Citrus Fertiliser.

Container Gardening

Increase watering of all plants in containers or pots as the weather warms up. Adding Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic at each watering will give you healthier plants and flowers.

Repot houseplants if you haven’t already done so including orchids after flowering.
