What to plant in your garden during May

According to Palmers New Zealand, May is one of the most exciting gardening months on the calendar, Autumn! It is the best time to plant new trees and shrubs as they can get established over the cooler, wetter winter months.

Flower Garden

Plant new seasons Daphne, Camellias and Rhododendrons. The best time to have them is from winter to early springs before the new growths appear.

Now is the great time to plant Lilies as they are easy to grow and can be planted any time between now and September.

Plant up hanging baskets and terracotta pots with flowers for autumn.

Kitchen Garden

Plant your favourite seedlings such as; beetroots, broccoli, broad beans, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, onions, radish, spinach, swedes and turnips. These seeds can be sown directly into trays or directly into the ground.

Garlic and shallot bulb is perfect for this season and can be planted until late July.

Feed all citrus trees with Palmers Citrus Fertiliser.

Container Gardening

Increase watering of all plants in containers or pots as the weather warms up. Adding Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic at each watering will give you healthier plants and flowers.

Repot houseplants if you haven’t already done so including orchids after flowering.
