Techweek 2021: five free events showcasing the future of tech

Running from May 22-30, Techweek is a nationwide series of events, showcasing New Zealand innovation. It’s not just for tech savvy people or those working in the industry the either – the festival includes events for people of all interest and abilities.

Here are five free Techweek events around the country showcasing some of the exciting innovations that could change the way we live and work in the future.

Tech opportunities in 2021

Gore: Gore District Memorial RSA, Function Room
Monday 24 May, 12- 1.30pm

Ben Reid, one of New Zealand’s leading experts in emerging technologies, hosts a session where he will talk about what technology is on the horizon for the business community, and share his insights into trends and issues relevant to Aotearoa.

Industry 4.0: VR for remote robotic operation

Virtual Reality (VR) for remote robotic operation has attracted attention due to its broad applications in industry, agriculture, medicine. A demonstration of this advanced technology has been developed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury. The event will start with a brief overview of the technology, then the audience will watch a demo and have the opportunity to play with VR and remote robotic operation.

The future of digital payments in NZ

Technological advancements have led to massive changes in payment innovation globally. How consumers and businesses deal with payments is changing – with payments becoming faster and more convenient both locally and globally at both ends of the transaction. During this event, a panel of experts will be giving real-life examples of the changing payment ecosystem, innovation happening in NZ, and global trends to watch out for.

Changing the World with Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Gisborne: Rāngai Studios, 233 Gladstone Road, Gisborne

Mātai Medical Research Institute is a not-for-profit research centre. Its research is all about supporting kaupapa Māori and the community on a journey toward a better understanding of a healthy brain, heart, and body for improved patient outcomes. This event will explore how it using Aotearoa’s most advanced MRI system to improve patient and community outcomes.

Cybersecurity Essentials

Gisborne: Regional Digital Hub, 502 Wainui Road, Kaiti
Thursday 27 May, 12PM – 1PM

This event introduces the changes to the online environment that make it necessary to review and revise normal practices to stay safe in the digital world. Hosted by Tairāwhiti Technology Trust (TaiTech), this event will explore the learning opportunities at different levels (from basic user through to cybersecurity professional) before opening the floor up to questions.
