Another way to help the planet out is to say “no”, especially to single use items. This is arguably the easiest thing you could do to help the environment!
You can refuse to buy products that create unnecessary waste, or any waste at all! Opt for fruits and vegetables that are not wrapped in plastics, or if you need them to be in a container, bring your own! If you are able, bring your own bags and containers and buy from the bulk sections of the grocery store. Minimize or eliminate other types of purchases that generate waste.
The New Zealand Government announced a plan to phase out single use plastic bags last year to help the environment. This is definitely a step in the right direction – but we can easily do more! Refuse to use single use products. Choose (or bring) reusable products or consider doing without. For example, straws in drinks when you are out, plastic cutlery, takeaway containers etc. If you can chose more sustainable food and beverage containers, cups, plates, straws, razors, diapers, shopping bags, etc.
Another thing you could easily do (although it might be hard because everyone loves free things) is to say no to giveaways. You should take a moment and think do you really need that promotional item? Or is it just going to sit in a cupboard cluttering and taking up unnecessary space, until it ends up in landfill, or polluting our environment. For those in the business of creating or buying promotional items, start seeing whether you can switch to more environmentally friendly products! So remember – just say no! The planet will thank you for it.
