For many of us, being stuck at home with not much else to do but create masterful dishes is a dream. Perhaps you’re using the time to master sourdough or make pasta from scratch? During last year’s lockdown, my wife and I took turns creating a three-course meal for each other – it was a great way to stretch our culinary skills and a nice opportunity to sit down and connect and be present with each other.
Eat to keep a healthy mind
However, not everyone is comfortable in the kitchen; yet it’s particularly important at times like this to continue to eat healthy, well-balanced, and nourishing meals. Just as your body needs fuel to stay physically fit, your brain needs nutrients to perform at its best.
According to Health Navigator, maintaining healthy eating habits can improve moods and mental wellbeing. As well as reducing sugary, salty, and processed food (which, unhelpfully, we’re often drawn to when we’re feeling anxious or stressed), Health Navigator suggests we eat a wide range of foods including:
- vegetables (e.g., carrots, dark leafy greens, cucumber)
- fruits (e.g., bananas, apples, citrus, berries)
- legumes (e.g., lentils, chickpeas, beans)
- wholegrains (e.g., rice, oats, breads)
- nuts and seeds
- oily fish and lean meats
- good oils (i.e., most plant-based oils).

Food delivery services still operating during lockdown
For many, however, a trip to the supermarket or grocer to stock on supplies is not possible at present – and often, these are the people that are most in need of a hot, nutritious meal. Luckily, there are still plenty of food delivery services working around the clock to ensure those most in need – including older people, busy carers, and healthcare workers – continue to eat well over lockdown. If you’re feeling isolated at home, the friendly face of your local delivery service might provide a much-need chance for a quick natter (at a safe distance of course).
