From the desk of Jon Amesbury.

Hello,  and welcome to the first of my monthly Eldernet blogs providing information on Dementia and other Mental Health issues that can affect the elderly.

As we get older, our health sometimes deteriorates and our medical needs can become more complex, both physically and mentally. If you are caring for a relative, you will know how tiring, confusing and sometime frustrating this full time role can be, particularly if you are caring for a loved one by yourselfin the home environment. Alternatively, you may have already have a family member being looked after in a specialist unit which, in itself, can provoke some pretty intense emotions too.

The aim of these blogs is to provide some basic information to help you understand your family member’s condition and to point you in the right direction if you require help or support in your role as Careror family members. The blogs will be written in plain speak, meaning that I will, wherever possible, avoid using medical terminology as this can sometimes be confusing. These blogs are not meant to replace advice given by your health care professionals and I can’t answer individual questions, however what I can do is give you some basic information and point you in the right direction to get support that you may need.

I look forward to writing these monthly blogs and hope, that in some way, I can help you to come to terms with your loved one’s illness, providing you with a simple toolkit of information and advice to help you along the way.

Next month’s blog will look at what dementia is and how it can affect a person who has been given this diagnosis.

Until then, you are all in my thoughts.
