Are you eligible for free public transport?

The SuperGold Card or the ‘gold card’ as some people know it – gives people over 65 opportunities to stretch their money further. There are thousands of instant discounts and special offers. It also is your ticket to free public transport!

If you’re 65+ and a New Zealand resident, when you apply for New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super), you’ll automatically receive a SuperGold card in the mail. If you don’t get NZ Super, you can still apply for a SuperGold card. Simply fill in the SuperGold card application (PDF 393KB) and return it to MSD.

Note: Your NZ Super will need to be approved at least three weeks before turning age 65 if you wish to receive your SuperGold Card by your 65th birthday.

How do I use SuperGold to travel for free?

It’s easy. In most areas you’ll just need to show your SuperGold card to the bus driver, train staff or other transport operator. Check the SuperGold Card website to see if there are any additional requirements in your area.

Free travel is subject to time restrictions (i.e. off-peak times). Check the SuperGold Card website for additional information.

For those who still drive a car
