10 tips for winter wellness

Winter brings not only colder temperatures, but also an increase in coughs, colds, sore throats and influenza. Here are some tips to keep yourself well during the cooler months.

  • Get the flu vaccination through your general practice team. This is free for anyone 65 or older.
  •  Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and dry them with a paper towel or clean, dry towel. Winter illnesses are easily spread by unwashed hands.
  •  Spend some time outside. A walk outside is good for lungs and limbs!
  •  Sign up for a activity course, and get lots of ideas about being active inside. As well, it gets you out of the house!
  • Remember to eat lots of vegetables and fruit daily to keep your vitamin C levels topped up.
  • Reduce dampness in your home by keeping the bathroom door closed when showering or bathing, drying your clothes outside and using a dehumidifier if there is a lot of moisture or dampness.
  • Get fresh air in your home on sunny days by opening windows during the day and closing them before the sun goes down. Airing helps keep your home dry.
  • Take care with coughs and sneezing. If you are coughing or sneezing it’s best to stay at home rather than spread the germs. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or cough into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
  • Use Healthline (0800 611 116)  if you need advice or become unwell after hours.
  • If you live by yourself let family, a friend or neighbour know so they can keep an eye on you.
