Selwyn Village Residential Care Selwyn Village Residential Care Selwyn Village Residential Care

Moving from home into a village environment is a significant change for you and your family. We are here to help make this transition as smooth as possible.

Given the current COVID-19 environment we have temporarily disabled our ‘feedback’ feature. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Strictly No visitors
- at Ivan Ward Centre, Selwyn Village

Our new residential care buildings are purpose-built to deliver the best residential home care. The interior layout and the accessibility features promote residents’ independence. Our new care suites have been developed according to a ‘household’ layout. By having small communities or ‘households’ within the larger care community, the care suites provide an environment where people have a real sense of belonging within a household setting.

Each household looks more like, feels more like and functions more like a home, where you have your own private room with ensuite and share a spacious lounge with open-plan dining and kitchen area, leading to a large outdoor deck and seating. When residents’ whānau and friends come to visit, they’re also able to use the fully functional household kitchen which residents and families can use for cooking or baking. If you wish to stay with your loved one, each household has a whānau room for guests to stay overnight.

The aim of this design is to retain as much independence as is right for you, so you feel part of a home and a broader community. We are
looking to enhance all aspects of your wellbeing, eliminate loneliness and encourage you to continue living a meaningful and active life.

• There are 6 households of 12 residents each, across two floors
• a balcony or terrace for each household
• shop, hair salon and consulting room for visiting health professionals within the building
• routine doctors’ visits and 24/7 medical coverage
• care partners and nurse onsite 24/7

Each household has:
• its own 24/7 care partners
• lounge with fireplace
• one large dining table, room for all members of the household to dine together
• domestic open plan kitchen for residents, whānau and staff
• a den or whānau room for residents and families to use during visits, or for whānau to stay overnight, as appropriate (fold-out couch bed)
• a guest toilet close to the whanau rooms
• In addition, there is a small domestic laundry that both residents and families can use should they wish to (a regular commercial laundry service is also available).

Each resident’s care suite has:
• its own ensuite (bidet optional)
• a fully adjustable electric hospital bed
• a wardrobe and other basic furnishings are available if desired
• wifi, smart TV with access to SKY TV*, Netflix* and Skype*
• hoist and smart call bell system
*These services are organised by family and charged directly to the family.

We offer a wide range of activities for your enjoyment, and to maintain mobility and develop skills.

There is access to recreation, leisure and exercise. This includes a weekly happy hour and such activities as news reading, crosswords, active chair games, bingo, inter–house quiz competitions, walks and wheelchair rides, a craft afternoon, outings and shopping trips.

A variety of entertainers visit frequently. Special events are organised by our staff to celebrate days and seasons such as St Patrick’s Day, Mothers Day, and Easter - times when an extra effort is made to have a truly festive occasion for everyone.

The Selwyn Foundation has been around for a very long time.

The Selwyn Foundation is an independent, faith-based New Zealand registered charity providing services to older people and their families. We have been leading the way in improving the quality of life of our elders for over sixty five years. As pioneers of the retirement village model and of rest home care in this country, we are uniquely experienced in providing residential care, independent retirement living and community outreach services for older adults.

With the dramatic rise of New Zealand's ageing population, the work of The Selwyn Foundation is more important than ever. Building on our achievements to date — and in keeping with our original Mission to provide quality care for elders — we will continue to innovate, diversify and offer a continuum of flexible care options that meet the present and future needs of ageing people and their families.

In keeping with our mission:
To deliver quality services that are responsive to the ageing person and their family, ensuring that our charitable outreach supports those who are vulnerable or in need.

Our activities are grouped in four key areas:

Enhancing the lives of elders who are vulnerable or in need.

To support our mission we reappraised our definition of 'vulnerability' and developed new, practical ideas on how our charitable mission could affect the quality of life of older people. We identified three particular areas where our help can make a substantial difference to those in need:

• Social isolation/loneliness
• Affordable housing
• Hardship support

These priorities are funded through surpluses derived from the various Selwyn villages, community services and educational functions, and through fundraising, donations, bequests, and sponsorship initiatives and in the future surpluses from commercial partnerships. We have partnered with Auckland Council to further build on our affordable housing goals in addition to our 81 rentals.

Investing in research and education to deliver quality care.

The Selwyn Institute takes a holistic approach to the wellbeing of older people and helps inform our charitable and business functions through knowledge-sharing, research, trials, innovations, and technology development.

The Selwyn Foundation is committed to opening up growth and skill opportunities that help our staff, their families and our residents.

Providing care and support to elders in their community.

Recognising that village life is not for everyone, The Selwyn Foundation is expanding its care and services to those who choose to remain living in their communities. Helping older people to remain connected through our Selwyn Centres, providing cost effective transport, health and fitness programmes, and providing products and services that they both need and want. All of this delivered through The Selwyn Way – our approach to care.

Creating thriving communities to age well.

We continue to build thriving communities, mindful of the potential need for continuum of care. With the development of The Selwyn Way, our approach to care, so too we have developed purpose-built residential care housing that allows us to provide residents with a more homely environment where they can find meaning and self-fulfilment.
