BRIAN WELLS HOUSE located in the new Ivan Ward Centre at Selwyn Village (1-17 Wainoni Ave) is a secure household for specialised dementia care or what we now like to refer to as memory support. The 18 residents are offered as fulfilling and enjoyable time as possible in a homely, caring environment. The environment is safe and secure.
LAVENDER COTTAGE is a secure Day Care Centre, one which is within the familiar setting of a suburban home, typical of its neighbours in Point Chevalier. The grounds, garden and the cottage itself are purposely kept this way so that people feel genuinely at home. Intimate care is offered for a maximum of 16 people on any one day. Lavender Cottage is at 23 Wainoni Street, Point Chevalier but access is from within the grounds of Selwyn Village.
We want all our residents and day care clients to have an enjoyable time here, with as fulfilling a life as is possible for them. We encourage residents and their family members to talk over any concerns with our managers.
MAKING YOU AT HOME
Although both are secure units to ensure the safety of residents or day care clients, everything possible is done to make people feel at home.
Visitors are welcome at any time, and family or friends are able to take their loved ones for an outing or a walk around Selwyn Village. Our people enjoy seeing babies, young children and pet animals - please feel free to bring them when visiting. Visitors bringing their musical skills are welcome - their contribution is especially helpful and is appreciated.
We encourage residents to bring such things as pictures, personal items, TV and radios so as to make their rooms familiar.
Also located in the Ivan Ward Centre, Brian Wells House residents will be able to access the shop, hair salon and consulting rooms for visiting health professionals.
Our new care suites have been developed according to a ‘household’ layout. By having small communities or ‘households’ within the larger care community, the care suites provide an environment where people have a real sense of belonging within a household setting.
Brian Wells household has:
• its own 24/7 care partners
• lounge area
• dining area for members of the household to dine together
• domestic open plan kitchen for residents, whanau and staff
• A lovely garden where residents and families can enjoy the outdoors
Each resident’s care suite has:
• its own ensuite (bidet optional)
• a fully adjustable electric hospital bed
• a wardrobe and other basic furnishings are available if desired
• wifi, smart TV with access to SKY TV*, Netflix* and Skype*
• a private phone may be installed in any room (rentals are charged to residents through Telecom)
• smart call bell system
*These services are organised by family and charged directly to the family. all meals are
• all meals are prepared and cooked on site. A qualified dietician oversees the menu and special diets are catered for
• if guests visit for lunch or dinner, they can often be catered for
• Brian Wells House is staffed 24/7 including nurses assisted by care partners and other professional staff as appropriate. All staff have on-going training as to the particular needs of the current residents in their care, and on safety issues
• doctors routinely visit the Brian Wells and there is medical coverage 24/7
• the village chaplain visits regularly and is available for counselling and support; worship services are held regularly in Brian Wells
• visiting family members and friends are always made very welcome any time, any day

Numerous activities are provided for enjoyment and we also provide activities designed to help people suffering from memory loss to retain as much as possible of the routine of daily living – or even to gain new skills.

Located at 43 Target Street, Pt Chevalier, Selwyn Village is set in 26 acres of park-like grounds on the water’s edge of the Pt Chevalier Peninsula. It is central to shopping malls, motorways, bus routes and only minutes from the City. We aim to promote a sense of community and companionship for residents and staff.

These facilities are situated on the ground floor of Lichfield Towers and are available for the sole use and enjoyment of residents from the entire village.
Cross-town Metrolink Bus, with frequent services through the Village from the end of Point Chevalier Peninsular to Glen Innes, via St Luke’s Shopping Centre and the Greenlane Clinical Centre.
The Village Administration Block is located on the ground floor of Lichfield Towers. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30 am - 4.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 10.00am - 4.00 pm
BOOKS AND LIBRARY SERVICE
Each house has a library where residents may read or borrow books. Collectively, the libraries have a stock of over 2,000 books. Large print books which have been withdrawn from public libraries are given to the village and may be borrowed free of charge.
CHAPEL OF CHRIST THE KING
The chapel is the focal point of Selwyn Village. Regular services of worship are held in the chapel. Services of worship are also held in Kerridge House, Sarah Selwyn Hospital and Ivan Ward Centre. A brochure is available detailing the chaplaincy service in Selwyn Village. Information on Chapel Services is available in the fortnightly newsletter. Chaplains are available for pastoral and spiritual care.
CAFE ON LICHFIELD
The Café on Lichfield is located in Lichfield Towers with a wide variety of refreshments and food available. Friends and family are most welcome. The café is open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm daily.
The Community Centre is located beside the Mini-Market and is available to all village residents. It includes the Hub, games room and music room.
The Craft Centre is located in the Community Centre and is a place where you can continue with your creative and artistic pursuits.
Registered medical practitioners are on duty or on call at all times.
The village hairdressing salon is located in the Community Centre. It is open Tuesday to Friday: please telephone or call in to make an appointment. In addition, hairdressers visit each rest home and the hospital at least once a week.
MAINTENANCE - (All Property Related Matters / Appliance Faults)
Independent residents please note that in order to provide an effective and efficient service the Village has preferred contractors that are on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. These contractors are familiar with the site, the overall infrastructure of the Village and our Health and Safety procedures etc.
All meals are prepared and cooked on site. A qualified dietician oversees the menu. The main mid-day meal is served in the cafe of Lichfield Towers.
The mid-day meal can be ordered by Independent Residents if they wish by contacting a member of the resident services team.
Medical Centre hours are Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm.
This is located in the community area and sells a range of essential items for your convenience e.g. stamps and postage items.
The Selwyn News is the village newsletter, published fortnightly on Thursdays. It gives village news and information about activities, entertainment, church service times and other events. It is distributed throughout the village free of charge.
Please arrange your own ‘Herald’ delivery by phoning the Circulation Department on Ph 0800 100 888. Newspapers can be also purchased from Café on Lichfield.
INDEPENDENT RESIDENTS COMMITTEE
This has been formed by the residents' to liaise with the Selwyn Foundation administration. Each area of the village has a resident’s council representative.
Our security guard patrols the village all night from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am.
Shopping buses depart from outside Lichfield Towers every Thursday to St Lukes at 10.00 am, Pt Chevalier at 10.30am and New Lynn at 11.00 am. The transport cost is $5.00 per person.
A non smoking policy within our buildings applies to all residents, visitors and staff. Residents of rental and ‘Occupation Right Agreement’ areas are permitted to smoke within their own private living accommodation but not in any area of communal activity.
These are available at a reduced cost for attending Hospital Appointments only. Please see the receptionist at Administration.
Transport is provided within the village by a buggy service. The buggy operates from the community centre Monday to Friday 9.00am - 3.00pm. Saturday to Sunday 9.00am - 3.00pm on request.
We have a number of rooms throughout the village available to hire for private functions by village residents. The music room, the Hub, theatre and café extension can be booked for a small fee. We can also offer a catering service through our on-site kitchen at an additional cost.

Enhancing the lives of elders who are vulnerable or in need.
Promoting the welfare of elders in general is an important aspect of the Foundation’s charitable Mission. We therefore distribute more than 30% of our annual operating surplus to charitable and not-for-profit groups working with or for the elderly at both community and national level. This is in addition to funding our community outreach Selwyn Centre programme, our subsidised rental accommodation and village medical centres.
Looking to the future, our charitable focus will be to deliver on our mission in combating
social isolation and loneliness, increase social housing and offer hardship support.
Investing in research and education to deliver quality care.
The Selwyn Foundation supports a wide range of gerontology research. In addition to assisting universities with studies that influence the wellbeing of elders, we also fund The Selwyn Institute for Ageing and Spirituality and are the principal benefactor of The HOPE Foundation. By investing in quality learning and research opportunities, we aim to enhance the wellbeing of our residents, and of New Zealand’s ageing population as a whole.

Providing care and support to elders in their community.
Selwyn’s community outreach is most evident in the Selwyn Centres. With 40 venues provided in association with Anglican parishes and serving more than 800 people each week, the programme provides community drop-in centres that enable those who may be living alone and in need of companionship to remain active, healthy and independent in their own neighbourhoods.
