Service Description
Service Description
Heretaunga Seniors, Community Centre for Older People is open to the community four days a week. We invite you to come along and join us for some fun and friendship in a place that is both warm and welcoming. This is a place “where everyone knows your name”.

We know that it is difficult whatever your age, to join a new group so we try to make this process much easier. You can contact our service yourself or someone else such as your Doctor another health professional or family member may make a referral. In the first instance we will get your contact details and arrange, if you wish, for our friendly ‘Pastoral Care Co-ordinator’ to pop around and meet you. She will talk to you about what you would like to happen, tell you about our service, give you some written information as well as arranging transport for you if you would like to attend the Centre and will even ring to remind you before you are picked up on the day.

To make sure that you feel comfortable coming along to the Centre on your first couple of weeks we ‘buddy’ you up with one of our volunteers who will help you familiarise yourself with us and the surroundings.

Each day at the Centre is different and there should be something happening each day that will appeal to you.

On Monday and Thursday people arrive at the Centre where we begin the day with a get together and engage in one of our activities before a generous morning tea. Following morning tea we resume activities. On Mondays we have a ‘keep fit’ and therapeutic exercises group - good for balance and strength, followed by a Craft Group in the afternoons and on Thursdays, games such as indoor bowls, rummikub, scrabble, crib, 500 and housie are played. Games finish at 12 noon followed by a 2 course meal for those who wish to stay ($8 incl morning tea) or $15 in total if you also stay for 2 course lunch. On the 2nd Thursday of each month a big screen movie is offered after the meal.
Tuesdays are our ‘Computer Class’. We can help you learn new skills in a non-threatening environment including how to email and skype etc. The groups finish just before midday.

Wednesday is our community day. This runs from 10.00am to 1:00pm and attracts a group of 50 - 60. The day begins with morning tea after which there is a social hour, which often involves people just enjoying the companionship of others or engaging in puzzles, a quiz etc. The programme includes visiting entertainers such as musicians, dancers, kapa haka groups or a school group entertaining. We also have educational speakers and presenters on topics of interest such as: falls prevention, geneology, maintaining good nutrition etc. An example of one such presentation was ‘ANZAC women’. This activity focused on the experience of women during the war.
The cost for the Wednesday community day is $15. Transport is an additional small fee.

MONDAY: ‘Keep Fit’ therapeutic exercises (am) Craft Group and 500 card club (pm)
TUESDAY: Digital Seniors - 6 week computer courses with 1:1 tuition and an drop-in internet cafe/hub every Tues from 1 - 3.00pm. (Van outing to a place of interest once a month - includes a meal out)
WEDNESDAY: Community Day (incl. 2 course hot meal)
THURSDAY: Games bowls, Cards (500, crib, skipbo )rummikub, scrabble etc. (incl. optional 2 course hot meal) -

Our Pastoral Care Co-ordinator is available to help support your quality of life. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference. Perhaps you need assistance with accessing home-help, changing a tap washer or finding someone to do your lawns or garden. Tell us what we you need and we will endeavour to help you.

“Wednesday is the best day of the week.”
“I live for each Wednesday.”
“I come for the company.”
“I don’t know where I’d be without you.”

Heretaunga Seniors has been offering a service to the elderly of Hastings and Havelock North for close to 25 years and is one of four other Day Centres supported by Anglican Care Waiapu.

A real sense of teamwork by both paid staff and our team of highly valued volunteers is the basis for the success of the service. Three staff members and a great team of 30 volunteers assist the Manager. Volunteers are matched to their areas of interest eg, kitchen staff, drivers and hostesses. New volunteers are warmly welcomed.

Volunteer team meetings are held bi-monthly and while staff training is an important aspect of these meetings it is also a time to recognise & thank our volunteers. One way staff like to do this is to serve lunch or morning tea for them on this day.

Please contact us for further information about our service. We welcome your call. ph (06) 870 7025
