This purpose built Rest Home and Continuing Care Unit is located in Halls Road at the south end of Pahiatua on land donated by Mr and Mrs Hughes, whose family were early settlers of this area.  It is surrounded by park-like grounds, bordering a farmlet, where residents can view wildfowl life, and animals.

The complex has 58 beds in total, - 18 in the Continuing Care Unit, 9 Special Needs and Alzheimer, 29 stage 2, and 2 G.P beds.  The home also caters for day care and convalescing patients, along with patients requiring alternative care.  As well as the Rest Home it has a Villa Complex, consisting of ten nicely appointed units for purchase.

Waireka is a Trust Home, managed by a Board, consisting of our Patron Judge David Carruthers, and 12 Board Members, some of these members are elected by the community, some are appointed to represent community organisations.  The home is supervised by a Care Manager, who is a Registered Nurse with up to 80 staff members under their leadership, many of whom also have their nursing certificate.  These staff are dedicated to provide absolute quality care in this pleasant and modern environment, with a philosophy of recognising each resident as an individual, ensuring they receive the respect and dignity each one deserves, and encouraging them to maintain a link with the community in which most of them once lived.

A Diversional Therapist and Recreational Officer provide recreational activities, either in a group or one to one basis, daily. Special dietary needs are catered for.

Visitors are welcome at all times, between 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., or at other times at the discretion of the Care Manager.  All residents are admitted to Waireka Rest Home on a trial basis only, for a period of up to three months.  This gives both parties time to assess whether or not the home is suitable residence for the resident, and all criteria are met.  At the end of trial period, all Board payments will be made by cash or cheque.  After the trial period residents are required to make Board payments by automatic transfer from their bank accounts, into the Waireka Home bank account in four- weekly advance payments.

The home requests that a member of the family assist residents with all financial matters. No one is denied Rest Home care due to lack of funds, as long as they meet the assessment criteria of the Health Funding Authority.  If you do not have sufficient funds to meet the Rest Home charges and require a subsidy, the Administration Officer is available to discuss these matters with you in strict confidence, and assist you to initiate the application.

Residents entering stage 2 category, have their health needs assessed by the Care Manager on arrival, to determine Board costs.

All Board costs are reviewed annually in the month of May, for private paying residents.
