| “I have lived at the village for 9 months now and love my new home. I cook my own meals if I want to, or I can go to the village restaurant if I want a night off. The cleaning of my apartment can either be done by me or one of the cleaning staff will do it for me.
I never wanted to move into a rest home or into a retirement village with a rest home attached and living at Mt Eden Gardens has shown me I can get all the services I want right here, and as far as future health is concerned why worry about something that may never happen. This is a small village that is very friendly and relaxed, I come and go as I please just like I did in my own home, except here I can go out in a group or on my own and I am busier than ever enjoying myself. I often think I should have come to live here much sooner.” Audrey, age 82 “Recently I had a hip replacement operation, and afterwards was hospitalised for a week. I left hospital with two crutches and a long list of ‘Don’ts and Do’s!’ Fortunately I had arranged with Tracie, the Village Manager, to get extra help on my return to Mt Eden Gardens. For two weeks I had all my lunches and dinners provided and brought in to my apartment. I had help with showering and dressing, my apartment was cleaned each week, my bed was stripped and remade weekly, and bed-linen and towels were laundered. Every morning one of the staff would check that I was OK, and make up my bed. And of course there was always a call button near at hand for 24-hour assistance if I needed it. Then, feeling much better, I negotiated a ‘reduced service’ – the evening meal only was provided – and soon I was well enough to eat that in the restaurant with other residents. My apartment continued to be cleaned, the laundry done, and a staff member would check on me each morning. After about five weeks I felt able to return to complete independence. I was very pleased to have been a resident of Mt Eden Gardens at a time when I needed this extra care. Not only was it all provided, competently and sensitively, by members of staff who I already knew – and who knew me – but I was cared for in the familiar surroundings of my own home. I think that the ‘boutique’ nature of this retirement village – the fact that it is small, all under one roof, and has staff that we can get to know well – is a great advantage.” Janet, age 78 |
