| Wharekaka Rest Home is owned and operated by the Wharekaka Trust Board. This 'not for profit' ownership structure ensures that the services are operated on behalf of and for the benefit of the residents in this 19 bed home. Wharekaka also provide eight independent, two bed room villa's and are in the process of building two more villa's. These villas are on land adjacent to the rest home. All Villa's are available as they become vacant on a 'Occupation Rights Agreement' basis and may be purchased in the name of an individual trust. Enquiries are being taken from interested parties for the two villas being built. Please call the Business Manager for further details.
The home is managed by a full time Business Manager with the support of a Nurse Leader for 20 hours per week. We also have a resident care coordinator who is an Enrolled Nurse and works 32hrs per week. The RN is on call outside normal hours. We have wonderful community involvement in the home and our residents are able to keep up with all the coming and goings of our area. Volunteers from the Ladies Auxiliary visit the home. Besides the social aspects of their visit they also help residents with their everyday purchases from local shops. Residents tell us that they love Gail’s cooking! Good quality food with a variety of menus is an important part of our care. We enjoy lovely home cooking and baking. Our dining room is conducive to the enjoyment of meal times; it looks attractive. There are expansive views across the garden and the seatings are arranged for four place settings at each round table. Dining tables and chairs are solid wood and the chairs are attractively upholstered and easy to get in and out of. This is a nice setting in which to really enjoy Gail’s cooking. Visitors are always offered either morning or afternoon tea or even a meal if they are visiting during these times. Wharekaka is of course located in the wonderful wine growing region of Wairarapa. We are close to The Square and central shopping area, so those who visit from out of town can easily spend a whole day (or more) here, visiting, shopping and sampling the specialties of our region. Visitors are welcome to take a resident out eg for a walk in our own parklike grounds, The Square, shopping or to any of our quality eateries and cafes in town. We have wonderful support from the wider community, with people donating all manner of things, like fruit and vegetables. We have a group of people who come to the home and bottle or prepare for freezing, any extras. |
