Testimonials
RESIDENTS

“Like living in a little bit of heaven.”

“Food, good choice of food, sausages, meatloaf, everyday a choice of two. Don’t have to go to the supermarket or do the washing up afterwards. I like my bedroom in here too, it’s small but I like it. One of these girls will take me for a shower. That wouldn’t happen everyday when I was at home alone.”

“Really appreciate the dedication and friendliness of all the staff.”

“I enjoy it immensely. I like the caregivers here. They’d do anything for you. I like the meals, one of the reasons I had to come was I wasn’t cooking too well at home on my own. It’s very peaceful because we’re tucked away in the bush, it’s so quiet here.”

“It’s more social here than when I was in my own home by 10,000 times. Oh yes. When I first came in it was Christmas and I had people from all round the island call into see me when they were down here. It was my birthday the other day and I had some friends from Te Puke come into see me.”

“You get an amazing view, at night time all the street light up like a Christmas tree, that bus service is superb. Get on the bus, sit anywhere you like. Every 15 minutes it goes.”

“Doctor said you just can’t go past WesleyHaven, it’s the carers, they are often there long term, they are very happy in their work and he recommended it highly.”

“The grounds are nice, beautifully kept, we go for walks in the warmer months. The gardens are so nicely looked after.”

RELATIVES & FRIENDS OF RESIDENTS

“They are very good. They don’t rush. They respect mum’s likes and dislikes because even with short term memory loss she is fiercely independent. She’s got her own little room with all her things from home.”

“I do feel on the whole they are very good. It’s the carers that make it rather than the building. They all know mum by name which is so important. They make a point of using her name even if they are passing her in the hallway at least she hasn’t forgotten her own name even if she’s forgotten most other things.”

“If there are angels on earth then these girls are them. They do a marvellous job”.

STAFF

“The staff are all really good, I think we’ve got a really good team here, we don’t have a high staff turnover, casuals come and go but the permanent staff seem to stay on which is really good. Some staff have been here over 20 years.”

“I think the residents get a fuller life, they appear to be very happy. A lot of them have come from living alone and they really enjoy the company, we’ve had a couple that have just come in for respite care, one’s just turned a hundred, and they’re staying permanently now, one’s just gone home, she’ll be back in a couple of weeks, before she came in she was very morbid, and they can’t believe the spring in her step now since she’s been here, so they’re looking at sending her back here and she wants to come back here.”

“We take a personal interest in the clients; the residents here are not just a number.”

Special Features
Wesley Deckston Home

The smells of home cooking and baking waft from the kitchen directly over the servery to the sunny dining room and spacious communal lounge. Views from the dining room's full length windows and sliding doors opening onto a deck encompass open space, gardens, bush and in the distance, the suburb of Naenae. As this is a relatively small home with just 27 rooms, residents get to know each other well resulting in a friendly environment and cheerful banter.

The rooms are arranged on two separate levels with the communal areas an active hub between them. The design is the more traditional concept of each room having its own hand-basin with bathroom facilities being shared. Residents can either retain their own General Practitioner or attend the weekly clinic held at Deckston by General Practitioner Dr Thomson from the Naenae Medical Centre.

The staff enjoy humour and a good team culture with Deckston Home being used as the Wesleyhaven pilot for a new "Strength Based" programme being introduced throughout Wesley Community Action. This will further enhance the Deckston team's way of working together to assist residents and each other.

WESLEY COMMUNITY ACTION SERVICES FOR OLDER PEOPLE PHILOSOPHY

Wesley Community Action provides services for older people that are life enhancing, complement individual lifestyles and promote personal growth. We unconditionally value and honour each person as a contributing member of the community recognising that each person is an expression of a particular culture, social network, environment and life experience. We also recognise that people have spiritual, social, sexual, emotional, physical and intellectual needs throughout their lifespan.

The services are designed to enable the person to feel a sense of dignity, well being, uniqueness and a purpose for living by:

1. providing care that respects people’s independence and need to exercise control over their lives.

2. providing the opportunity for people to make and maintain meaningful relationships and supporting existing social networks and primary carer relationships.

3. supporting and encouraging the development of existing abilities.

4. creating environments that provide for personal choice, space and dignity.

5. maintaining connections with the local community.

Interests & Activities

The Activity Programme for Residents.

Mobility, enjoyable exercise and activities suitable for each individual’s needs are encouraged in a varied programme. Our Recreational Programme is faciliated by the Recreational Co-ordinator with oversight by an Occupational Therapist. Each person’s needs are individually assessed. Residents are encouraged to get involved in group activities, however for some, one on one time with the Co-ordinator is a preferred option.

The Activity Programme provides the opportunity to take part in cooking, games, music and sing alongs. In addition, special events are celebrated and a number of people come regularly to entertain. For those who are able, van drives are organised from time to time as well as trips to concerts in the community. Residents are also encouraged to go out with family members or friends for shopping and lunches etc.

We encourage our residents to maintain and continue to develop their interests and activities.

We can arrange for the delivery of the Dominion Post at the resident’s cost.

There is also a small resident’s shop at Strand Home open Monday, Wed & Friday between 10.30am and 11.30am for the purchase of toiletries, snacks etc.
