Our wonderful staff are dedicated to providing Wholehearted Care and continually go beyond what is basic requirement to truly understand individual needs. Our care comes from the heart as well as the head. We treat our residents with respect and compassion.

We have an extensive activities programme including regular outings, entertainment, concerts, exercise therapy, visiting library service, newspaper readings, music and sing-alongs, housie, quizzes and happy hours. An interdenomination church service is held weekly.

Interests & Activities

The Recreational Therapy programme includes individual and group activities, has creative and intellectual components and includes regular supervised outings and visits from a variety of entertainers.
The library service is available fortnightly. Special needs such as large print books, and books on special areas of interest are catered for. Talking books for Residents with severe sight impairment are available from the Foundation of the Blind. Library books are available in shelved areas located in the Lounge areas.

There is a book at reception for you or your relative to sign if you are going out. Visiting is encouraged at any time. It is our policy for you to sign in and out of the register at reception for us to maintain safety in our facility.

All visitors to the facility must sign the visitors register at the main reception. Please inform a staff member prior to taking a resident out.

We have a special posey of flowers delivered to celebrate residents birthdays. Your family is welcome to make prior arrangements regarding morning teas etc.

Details re Meals Breakfast may be served in rooms, but we encourage residents to have other meals in the Dining Room where possible. Please let us know of any cultural or spiritual food preferences, food dislikes or any allergy to food. Food kept in your room should be stored in a container with a lid. Staffing Details To know that a continuing care hospital is on-site and close at hand provides peace of mind for residents and their families. At Mary Shapley our rest home /hospital facility came first and, for some time has held the reputation as being the leading provider of residential care for the elderly in Whakatane and the surrounding area. The professional team of registered nurses, caregivers and support staff are on hand to provide quality care, support and service to all residents in their care. Our staff are experienced with ongoing training in all aspects of aged care.
