HOLMDENE JOINS NATIONAL ELITE
Holmdene Home & Hospital in Balclutha is in New Zealand’s top 3% of aged care providers in terms of giving the very best of care for residents. One of seven Presbyterian Support Otago (PSO) homes, Holmdene recently received four-year Ministry of Health Certification following a comprehensive independent audit late last year ( 2011. The audit included reviews of policies and procedures, observation of how services were provided to residents, surveys of and meetings with residents and families, plus interviews with rest home management. The Chief Executive of PSO, Gillian Bremner, said it was a well-deserved outcome for all the hard work going the ‘extra miles’ for residents and families. “We know our staff are doing a great job but having that belief endorsed officially by independent auditors is extremely satisfying,” Mrs Bremner said. “Just 21 out of out of 700 homes have this top recognition, and we have five of them—Elmslie House, Ross Home, Ranui, Taieri Court and now Holmdene; a remarkable 24%. “Residents and relatives can be confident that the care at these top five homes is of the highest standard,” she added. “It certainly is a big congratulations to all staff.” Holmdene Manager Steph Leith said she was “absolutely delighted” with the outcome of the independent audit. “Everyone here worked really hard to achieve that result and I’d like to thank them for putting into practice our ‘valuing lives’ philosophy, which helped achieve that four-year certification,” she said. “I was particularly thrilled the auditing team reported that there were no improvements required.” Holmdene’s audit report said residents and relatives confirmed that the quality of care to the people who lived at the home was very high, and was due to the emphasis around the valuing lives work. PSO’s Valuing the Lives of Older People philosophy recognises that with the right support and services, ageing can be a positive experience resulting in a sense of contribution and satisfaction with everyday life. Holmdene, home to 35 people with 13 in the rest home and 22 receiving hospital-level care, has been an integral part of Balclutha town for 47 years. Permanent and casual staff total 56. | Holmdene is an integral part of the Balclutha community and a highly sought-after home for older people seeking residential care.
The exceedingly high standard of meals is always commented on by residents and visitors alike, as is the high standard of care provided by a stable, dedicated staff. All Presbyterian Support Otago residences have a policy of valuing the lives of older people, and this is reflected in the many services and facilities offered. Staffing levels in our hospitals are at the higher end for the sector, and a large percentage of caregivers have formal industry qualifications. A high level of physiotherapy input is also put in place, with a focus on maintaining or improving current mobility. Holmdene is purpose-built and maintained to a high level, and residents have plenty of room in which to enjoy the wide range of activities continually available to them. Community Meals on Wheels are provided from Holmdene which is linked physically to the Clutha Health First hospital. |

Maintaining regular sporting and community activity our individual residents had before moving to Holmdene, is encouraged. We believe residents should maintain the connection they had with their family, friends and community, and will do all we can to ensure those connections are kept.
