Service Description
Kate McLean Home Care provides Quality In-home Care for elderly, convalescing, palliative and post-operative clients in Auckland, New Zealand.

Kate has had many years of experience working with older people as assistant manager in a Remuera Rest Home and a Home Care Agency. When setting up Kate McLean Home Care she wanted to concentrate the very best aspects of this experience into the service. A thoroughly professional service using skilled and loyal staff is a key component to this successful service with support for the caregivers as well as the clients.

To ensure successful delivery of care Kate says it is important that she meet each client before they commence the service. “I like to hold a ‘no obligation’ meeting so that I can meet the client and together we can assess what is actually needed.” Sometimes clients have a set idea about what can be provided and it is only after talking with us that we are really able to come up with the best solution. ‘We can be very flexible.”

When a client contacts the service they receive a folder containing:
· A cover letter setting out the availabliy of care .
· A Registration form
· The Terms of Business

Kate provides very careful oversight and management of each client’s situation. She is very conscious of the Privacy Act and it’s implications. She therefore clarifies with the client; who she should get back to with regard to primary communication, who is involved in the wider caring situation and who would like to be contacted when necessary. This avoids misunderstandings at a latter date. Kate also works in very closely with relevant health professionals.

Kate McLean Home Care is experienced in the delivery of home-based palliative care. The service works in closely with the St Joseph’s palliative care team and have attended in-service training course at St Josephs. Kate believes that it is important for clients receiving palliative care to have continuity of care, ensuring that the client receives the same carers for the shifts required.

Kate is conscious of the importance of maintaining healthy client/caregiver relationships. This ensures that both clients and caregivers are well cared for. Kate believes that as she supports her “wonderful crew of girls” that they in turn look after their clients. The type of care that caregivers are expected to deliver is matched to the abilities of the caregiver. Some caregivers hold overseas registered nursing qualifications which is necessary for the higher levels of care. The caseload of caregivers is also carefully monitored to avoid caregiver ‘burnout’ and jobs are varied.

Kate's office is open from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm. Her cellphone is always with her in case of emergency.
