Service Description
Heretaunga Seniors, Community Centre for Older People is open to the community four days a week. We invite you to come along and join us for some fun and friendship in a place that is both warm and welcoming. This is a place “where everyone knows you name”.

We know that it is difficult whatever your age, to join a new group so we try to make this process much easier. You can contact our service yourself or someone else such as your Doctor another health professional or family member may make a referral. In the first instance we will get your contact details and arrange for our friendly ‘Pastoral Care Co-ordinator’ to pop around and meet you. She will talk to you about what you would like to happen, tell you about our service, give you some written information as well as arranging transport for you if you would like to attend the Centre and will even ring to remind you before you are picked up on the day.

To make sure that you feel comfortable coming along to the Centre on your first couple of weeks we ‘buddy’ you up with one of our volunteers who will help you familiarise yourself with us and the surroundings.

OUR PROGRAMME AT THE CENTRE

Each day at the Centre is different and there should be something happening each day that will appeal to you.

On Monday and Thursday people arrive at the Centre where we begin the day with a get together and engage in one of our activities before a generous morning tea. Following morning tea we resume activities. On Monday we have a ‘keep fit’ group and meditation and relaxation session and on Thursday games such as darts and pool etc are played. Tuesdays are our ‘Computer Class’ and Craft group days. We can help you learn new skills in a non-threatening environment. The groups finish just before midday. On Monday and Thursday group sizes are smaller than our biggest day of the week. The cost for the day is $5. Transport costs are additional.

Wednesday is our community day. This runs from 10.am to 1:00pm and attracts a group of about 75. The day begins with morning tea after which there is a social hour, which often involves people just enjoying the companionship of others. The programme includes visiting entertainers such as musicians, dancers, kapa haka groups or arranged a school group visit etc, educational sessions eg first aid, looking after your feet etc. An example of one activity is ‘ANZAC women’. This activity focused on the experience of women during the war. The cost for the Wednesday community day is $9. Transport is additional.

OUR PROGRAMME AWAY FROM THE CENTRE

Our team of visiting volunteers are available to help support your quality of life. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference. Perhaps you need help with shopping, writing letters, changing a tap washer or getting out to appointments. Tell us what we can do to help you.

COMMENTS

“Wednesday is the best day of the week.”
“I live for each Wednesday.”
“I come for the company.”
“I don’t know where I’d be without you.”

OUR ORGANISATION

Heretaunga Seniors is one of four other Day Clubs operated by the Waiapu Anglican Social Services Trust.

A real sense of teamwork by both paid staff and our team of highly valued volunteers is the basis for the success of the service. Two staff members and a great team of 37 volunteers assist the Manager. Volunteers are matched to their areas of interest eg, home visitors, kitchen staff, drivers and hostesses. New volunteers are warmly welcomed.

Team meeting are held bi-monthly and while staff training is an important aspect of these meetings it is also a time to recognise our volunteers. One way staff like to do this is to cook and serve lunch for them on this day.
