| St Nicolas Hospital originally started off as a Nursing Home in the 1930's and later in the 1950's it was made into a boys home called Charles Upham Home. This closed a few years later. In early 1968 two young Dutchmen, Tony van der Boon and Casper van der Veer bought the home to start up a Student Hostel but were persuaded by Mrs Hannah Kirkwood, (then in her 90's) to establish it as a Nursing Home. Following extensions it was officially opened on the 18th March 1969 as St Nicolas Hospital. The hospital name was chosen because St Nicolas is the Patron Saint of Young and Old. St Nicolas Hospital lies between Canterbury University Campus and Riccarton Road within close proximity to many amenities including Westfield Shopping Mall, Bush Inn Centre and main Bus routes. Part of our Hospital borders on Kirkwood Intermediate School and the schools new confidence course providing much entertainment for our patients and staff. |
