REST HOME CARE - at Selwyn Village, with the Selwyn Foundation Group. There are two Rest Homes at the Selwyn Village Retirement Complex at 43 Target Street, Point Chevalier, Auckland. Kerridge House is a 61 bed rest home. Residents’ rooms have good views of the world outside. They feature double wardrobes, good heating - and bathrooms with heat lamps, showers, wash hand basins. Caswell House is a 52-bed rest home. All rooms are single with their own adjoining toilet and handbasin. Caswell has a lovely outdoor courtyard in a picturesque garden setting with tables and chairs, which contributes to a resident’s sense of wellbeing. WE CARE We want all our residents to have an enjoyable time here. Our managers are happy to meet with you, and to talk over any concerns you may have. MAKING YOU AT HOME You are welcome to hang pictures up on your walls and furnish the room yourself and you’re your own television set A private telephone may be installed in your room at rental charge through Telecom, although a telephone is also available for you to use. There is open visiting and your family and friends are always made very welcome. AMENITIES Kerridge has two lounges and two activity lounges - and there are four pleasant ‘nooks’ with chairs overlooking enclosed gardens. There is a library and also a coffee-making area. Caswell’s library has also an extra TV and video player available for residents’ personal use. We boast a lovely outdoor courtyard in a picturesque garden setting with tables and chairs. Numerous small lounges are located throughout Caswell House and there are two generous conservatories. HERE FOR YOU Our friendly receptionist is able to help you in many ways . . . - Arrange for you to have your ordered newspaper delivered to your room. - Make hair, podiatrist or physiotherapy appointments, arrange for a hearing check or your personal laundry requirements. - Make dental or optician appointments outside the village at your request - and arrange your transport for these or for medical appointments beyond Selwyn Village. - Organise any shopping requirements you may have from our Selwyn Village mini-market. - If you wish, our receptionist will help to manage your money, through operating a personal petty cash account and paying any bills you may incur. All diets and appetites are catered for - you may prefer a salad to hot vegetables for example. You are also welcome to have family or a guest for lunch at a small charge payable to reception - but please tell us in advance. Our Chaplain is available to everyone. There is a weekly service and communion in the Caswell Library. At Kerridge, there is a weekly Catholic Mass, and an Anglican service - especially for those who cannot manage to make the trip to Sunday services at our on-site Chapel of Christ the King. ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT We offer a wide range of activities for your enjoyment, and to maintain mobility and develop skills. There is access to recreation, leisure and exercise. This includes a weekly happy hour and such activities as news reading, crosswords, active chair games, bingo, inter–house quiz competitions, walks and wheelchair rides, a craft afternoon, outings and shopping trips. A variety of entertainers visit frequently. Special events are organised by our staff to celebrate days and seasons such as St Patrick’s Day, Mothers Day, and Easter - times when an extra effort is made to have a truly festive occasion for everyone. KEEPING SAFE - Valuables: Although Selwyn cannot accept responsibility for valuables such as jewellery and money, nevertheless items may be formally handed in to the office for safekeeping. - Fire: Kerridge and Caswell have smoke detectors and sprinklers. Should you hear an alarm, please stay where you are. Our fully trained staff have fire evacuation procedures in place. You can feel safe in their hands. - Visitors Book: We have a visitor signing in/out book which is monitored. This helps to ensure the safety of all our people. Located at 43 Target Street, Pt Chevalier, Selwyn Village is set in 26 acres of park-like grounds on the water’s edge of the Pt Chevalier Peninsula. It is central to shopping malls, motorways, bus routes and only minutes from the City. We aim to promote a sense of community and companionship for residents and staff. There are coffee and tea making facilities in the TV room kitchen. If you wish to access these facilities before 8.00 am and after 5.00 pm you may obtain a key from Administration for a deposit of $35.00 which is refundable on return. ADMINISTRATION The village Administration Block is located opposite the Chapel. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30 am - 4.30 pm. Saturday & Sunday, 10.00 am - 3.30 pm. ASB BANK A branch of the Auckland Savings Bank is situated between the administration office and the Community Centre. It offers a full range of banking services. Hours: Monday to Friday 9.30 am - 12.00 noon and 12.45 pm - 3.00 pm BOOKS AND LIBRARY SERVICE Each house has a library where residents may read or borrow books. Collectively, the libraries have a stock of over 2000 books. Large print books which have been withdrawn from public libraries are given to the village and may be borrowed free of charge. An Auckland City Mobile Library Bus visits Selwyn Village every Thursday between 9.15 am and 10.30 am and stops outside the main doors of Kerridge. It will not visit on Public Holidays or between the Christmas and New Year period. CHAPEL OF CHRIST THE KING The chapel is the focal point of Selwyn Village. Regular services of worship are held in the chapel and broadcast into the rest homes. Services of worship are also held in Brian Wells Lodge and Christ’s Hospital. A brochure is available detailing the chaplaincy service in Selwyn Village. Information on Chapel Services is available in the weekly newsletter. COFFEE INN Situated in the Community Centre, the Coffee Inn is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm daily. COMMUNITY CENTRE The Community Centre is located beside the ASB Bank and the Mini-Market and is available to all village residents who may wish to utilize it. CRAFT CENTRE The Craft Centre is located in the Community Centre and is a place where you can continue with your creative and artistic pursuits. DOCTORS Registered medical practitioners are on duty or on call at all times. GUEST COTTAGES Guest accommodation for family and friends is available for rent. Please enquire about prices and make reservations through the receptionist at Administration. HAIRDRESSER The village hairdressing salon is located in the Community Centre. It is open Monday to Saturday: please telephone or call in to make an appointment. In addition, hairdressers visit each rest home and the hospital at least once a week. HEARING AND HEARING AIDS A volunteer provides a highly efficient service for anyone who has a hearing aid and who needs supplies such as batteries. A Hearing Association member visits the village. Appointments may be made through the Medical Centre. For rest home residents mail is normally delivered to each ‘house’ by 11.00 am Monday to Friday. Your address for mail is: Mr / Mrs / Miss, Number / House, Selwyn Village, 43 Target Street, Point Chevalier, AUCKLAND 1022. Each ‘house’ has a box for outgoing mail which is cleared at 1.00 pm on weekdays and 4.30 pm on Saturdays. Mail to all independent living areas will be delivered by NZ Post directly to their own mail box. Please ensure your Selwyn Village address is given to NZ Post. If you are unsure of what your address is please check at administration first. MAINTENANCE - (All Property Related Matters / Appliance Faults) Independent residents please note that in order to provide an effective and efficient service the Village has preferred contractors that are on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. These contractors are familiar with the site, the overall infrastructure of the Village and our Health and Safety procedures etc. The procedure to access one of the above services is as follows: Monday to Friday, 8.30 am - 4.30 pm contact Administration (ph 846 0119) After Hours phone 845 0734. MEALS All meals are prepared and cooked on site. A qualified dietician oversees the menu. The main mid-day meal is served in the dining room of Lichfield Towers. There are two sittings: 11.30 am Cottage Residents 12.00 noon Villa and Apartment Residents The mid-day meal can be ordered by Independent Residents if they wish and/or for guests by signing the reservation book in the dining room by 3.00 pm the day before. You must then purchase a meal ticket from reception in the Administration Office. Meal tickets will be collected by a staff member attending to your table. MEDICAL CENTRE Medical Centre hours are Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. MINI MARKET - POST SHOP This is located in the Administration Block and sells a range of essential items for your convenience. NEWS The Selwyn News is the village newsletter, published weekly on Wednesdays. It gives village news and information about activities, entertainment, church service times and other events. It is distributed throughout the village free of charge. NEWSPAPERS Please arrange your own ‘Herald’ delivery by phoning the Circulation Department on ph 373 6000. PHYSIOTHERAPY Our physiotherapists provide a service to all residents in care. RESIDENTS COMMITTEES and the INDEPENDENT RESIDENTS COUNCIL These have been formed by the residents to liaise with the Selwyn Foundation administration. Each house or area of the village has a resident’s committee, with meetings open to all residents of the area concerned. SECURITY SERVICE Our security guard patrols the village all night from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am. SHOPPING BUSES On the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month: This leaves for Lynmall from outside Lichfield Towers at 11.45 am and leaves Lynmall at 2.00 pm. The transport cost is $3.00 per person. On the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month there is a trip to Pt Chevalier shops. The Bus leaves outside Lichfield at 10.30 am, returning at 11.30 am. The Transport cost is $1.00 per person. This service is for Independent Residents only and reservations are made through the receptionist in Administration. SMOKING A no-smoking policy within our buildings applies to all residents, visitors and staff. Those who smoke need to go outside to one of the properly designated smoking areas, all of which are located more than 2 metres away from any window or door opening. Residents of rental and ‘Occupation Right Agreement’ areas are permitted to smoke within their own private living accommodation but not in any area of communal activity. TAXI VOUCHERS These are available at a reduced cost for attending Hospital Appointments only. Please see the receptionist at Administration. TRANSPORT Within the village, transport is provided by buggies driven by our volunteers. They operate from the Community Centre 9.00 am to 12.00 noon and 1.00 pm to 2.30 pm each week day. To request a buggy please phone 846 0119 ext 756. On weekends, please phone 846 0119 ext 819. VILLAGE FACILITIES - available for hire by our residents The Community Centre, Theatre and ground floor Lichfield Towers (either the Lounge or TV Room) are available for private functions and bookings should be made through the Activities Co-ordinator. We charge a $30.00 deposit plus $3.00 per person to hire each area and these charges help to defray the costs in maintaining the standard of these facilities. Hireage includes use of the kitchen facilities, crockery and cutlery. If staff are required to clean up, serve or be in attendance, such costs will be additional. Please consult with the Independent Services Manager for details. VOLUNTEERS These are people who give their time and support to the life of the village. Most volunteers come from the community, others are themselves village residents. _______________________________________________________________________________ THE SELWYN FOUNDATION GROUP - The Selwyn Foundation has been around for a very long time. Selwyn’s residents mirror New Zealand society as a whole, having people from all kinds of backgrounds, life experiences and interests. These days, people entering our retirement villages are older - now that people are living and remaining active for much longer. Nevertheless, people residing in Rest Homes as well as those living independently, are encouraged to live as full a life as is humanly possible through maintaining existing links with community activities such as the RSA Club, local churches, Probus, U3A and sports clubs. Organised activities are on offer too – and managers are always interested in hearing of new ideas for activities, outings and social gatherings. Today’s retirement villages are the culmination of over 50 years of progress. It was towards the late 1940s that the Anglican Church’s Auckland City Mission became very concerned about the plight of elderly people to cope in sometimes dilapidated houses, often too large for them once children had grown up and moved away. The Mission had already done considerable work with older people by 1954 when the first 20 retired people became residents at Selwyn Village in Point Chevalier. This was the first rest home and retirement complex of its kind built in New Zealand. It still exists, although almost grown beyond recognition. In 1967, the Mission arranged for the creation of The Selwyn Foundation as a separate charitable trust, specifically set up to look after this special concern for the needs of older people in our society. Named after George Augustus Selwyn, first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, the Foundation is an independent perpetual trust and not-for-profit organisation. Selwyn owns or manages retirement facilities in Northland, throughout greater Auckland and in the Waikato. It continues to grow and flourish - it is here to stay! At Selwyn Village, residents may telephone the Community Centre for free transport to take them to the Village's branch of the ASB bank, shops, cafe, medical centre - or to visit family of friends in one of our hospitals. Rest Home lounges are the venue for all kinds of entertainment. This was 'Africa Day', put on by staff and their families who hailed originally from Southern Africa. |
